成長ホルモン放出促進因子受容体の内因性リガンドであるグレリンの投与は,下垂体から成長ホルモンを分泌させるだけでなく,視床下部を介して摂食を促進させ,エネルギー消費を抑制することで体重を増加させる.又,胃におけるグレリンの発現,分泌は絶食によって上昇し,摂食によって低下する.更に,迷走神経を介した消化管運動の調節,不安発現,循環器系,糖代謝,脂肪,学習,記憶などへの影響が報告されている.これらグレリンの多彩な作用は,様々な疾患に対するグレリン及びその受容体由来の創薬と臨床応用の可能性を示唆している
