In football, transitioning from first-person to a bird’s-eye view and its relation to positional memory remains unclear. To investigate this, we developed and validated a system using immersive head-mounted displays (HMD) to assess football players’ abilities, thus potentially enhancing positional memory. We assessed experienced and inexperienced players in a virtual football setting with randomly placed players. We measured the time and perspective shifts required to reconstruct player positions from a bird’s-eye view. Further, both groups observed players in a virtual environment and then reconstructed their positions for accuracy. Compared to inexperienced players, experienced players showed higher precision in reconstructing the spatial arrangement of player objects, suggesting the feasibility of evaluating the transition from first-person to bird’s-eye view. The system enables us to assess ball control, memory of teammate and opponent positions, and recall of key player positions for future plays. This demonstrated the value of the immersive HMD system, which can quantitatively manipulate VR variables, in comprehensively understanding cognitive relationships. Expanding this system for evaluating player attributes and training football players holds great promise.

In football, if one wants to move the game forward tactically, one must quickly understand how and where the players are moving. It is hypothesised that the ability to convert first-person information into a bird's-eye view is crucial for making quick and appropriate judgements. In particular, top players have shown great 'depth perception'. Although a connection between the conversion of a first-person perspective to a bird's-eye viewpoint and depth perception is plausible, the connection between these two skills has not yet been clarified. More studies are required to determine whether the transfer of a first-person perspective to a bird's-eye perspective plays a role in the superior depth vision demonstrated by great players. Understanding this link might have implications for training and the improvement of athletes' depth perceptions. The primary objective of this study is to design a system capable of systematically assessing first-person and bird's-eye perspective conversion skills using a Head-mounted display (HMD) and to investigate the association between this ability and depth vision. We performed an experiment in which 12 experienced and 12 novice football players viewed randomly positioned player objects in a virtual football environment from a first-person viewpoint and then rebuilt the player objects position from the bird's-eye perspective. The depth perception of an individual was also evaluated. Compared with novice players, experienced players were able to rebuild the placement of player objects with greater precision. There was no significant difference in depth perception between the two groups. In trials comprising 2-8 items, there were no significant differences between experienced and novice individuals in terms of the time necessary to locate objects precisely, regardless of expertise. However, in trials involving 10-16 items, the experienced group had a markedly decreased completion time. However, there was no link between the results and depth perception. These results imply that the capacity to convert first-person perspective to bird's-eye view can be tested. However, the ability to convert a first-person perspective to a bird's-eye view and depth perception may represent separate skills. This suggests that those who are adept at transforming a first-person viewpoint into a bird's-eye view may not necessarily have great depth perception, and vice versa. Further studies are required to fully understand the links among these cognitive skills. Other factors, such as age, sex, and experience, may also influence cognitive skills. Future research should explore these variables to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between viewpoint transformation and depth perception.

Aim: Schizophrenia (SZ) is characterized by abnormalities in self-representation, including an aberrant sense of agency (SoA). Experimentally observed abnormalities in force matching and intentional binding tasks suggest that the SoA in SZ is compromised at the implicit level. However, these task effects have been reported independently, leading to inconsistencies that complicate the understanding of SZ pathophysiology. Methods: Thirty-three patients with SZ and 37 nonclinical (healthy) controls (HCs) performed force matching and intentional binding tasks. The former task assessed sensory attenuation, while the latter evaluated an intentional binding effect, both measuring implicit levels of SoA. We previously observed that the cardiac phase (systole vs diastole) influences intentional binding. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between sensory attenuation and intentional binding, including this “cardiac effect,” which refers to the influence of cardiac interoceptive signals. Results: In SZ, significantly reduced sensory attenuation, a greater but nonsignificant intentional binding effect, and a significant opposite cardiac effect were observed compared with HCs. Sensory attenuation and intentional binding were significantly and positively correlated in the SZ group but not in the HC group. Across all participants, sensory attenuation correlated with the cardiac effect on intentional binding. This effect remained significant in the HC group but not in the SZ group. Conclusion: Group differences and task associations suggest shared mechanisms and pathophysiology in SZ, potentially involving impaired predictive processes and the failure of sensory attenuation. The cardiac effect may be explained by interoceptive sensory attenuation, and its failure could lead to a disturbed SoA in patients with SZ.

Sensory attenuation, which is the brain's mechanism to differentiate self-generated actions from external ones, identifies self from non-self, and is impaired in disorders such as schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. This impairment can result in hallucinations and delusions owing to the misattribution of self-produced stimuli as external stimuli. Considering the limitations of traditional diagnostics in detecting these perceptual changes, sensory attenuation is a promising assessment and intervention tool. This study examined the effect of auditory and visual feedback on sensory attenuation in healthy adults, proposing its enhancement as a rehabilitative strategy for psychiatric disorders. Through experiments, we assessed the impact of feedback on sensory attenuation and its relationship with psychological state. Auditory feedback was found to significantly influence sensory attenuation. However, combined feedback and long-term effects were not observed. The link between sensory attenuation and psychological indicators suggests the potential for targeted modulation in individuals with schizophrenia-like mental states. This study highlights the potential of feedback-based modulation of sensory attenuation in the development of rehabilitation techniques for neuropsychiatric conditions, and sets the stage for further research on its long-term application in clinical settings.

高齢者にとって人とのつながりを多く持つことは、活力を得るだけでなく認知症の予防や健康寿命を延ばすためにとても重要である。近年、「社会とのつながり」や「家族との関わり」において多様な方法がインターネット、仮想・拡張現実、ヒューマンインターフェイスなどの技術の発展により可能となってきた。これらの技術を活用した共同行為課題システムが運動パフォーマンス向上に有効であることが明らかになれば、遠隔リハビリテーションや遠隔コミュニティの創出が期待される。
