    <p>We investigated the effects of the intentional alternate bearing method on fruit weight, shoot structure, leaf photosynthetic ability, and carbohydrate content of the leaf in loquat (<i>Eriobotrya japonica</i> (Thunb.) Lindl.) cultivar ‘Mogi’ from 2019 to 2022. The treated (intentional alternate bearing) trees were divided into fruit-producing (fruiting shoot) and non-fruit-producing (non-fruiting shoot) areas, and compared with non-treated (conventional bearing) trees. Fruit weight was heavier on the treated trees than non-treated trees in all years, and this influenced the fruiting quantity per tree in 2019. In contrast, the numbers of fruit clusters and total shoots per tree were higher than on non-treated trees in 2021. This suggests that the intentional alternate bearing method for loquat can increase the fruit weight compared with the conventional bearing method. The shoot diameter and number of leaves were influenced by the interaction between treatments and years, with different effects between the groups. Although the total yield for three years was almost the same between treated and non-treated trees, the yearly yield increased progressively in treated trees. It is considered that the increase in the number of shoots from adventitious buds, resulting in an increased number of fruit clusters in treated trees. Photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rates of fruiting shoot leaves in treated trees were higher than those of non-fruiting shoots and non-treated trees. The Sum of the starch and sugar contents was the highest in non-fruiting shoot leaves of non-treated trees and the lowest in fruiting shoot leaves of treated trees. These findings suggest that the photosynthetic ability of the fruit-producing area was related to the increase in fruit weight, and carbohydrate accumulation in non-fruit-producing areas was related to fruiting and fruit quality.</p>

    Acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC.) is a tropical evergreen shrub that produces vitamin C-rich fruits. Increasing fruit nutrition is one of the main targets of acerola breeding programs. Genomic tools have been shown to accelerate plant breeding even in fruiting tree species, which generally have a long-life cycle; however, the availability of genomic resources in acerola, so far, has been limited. In this study, as a first step toward developing an efficient breeding technology for acerola, we established a chromosome-scale genome assembly of acerola using high-fidelity long-read sequencing and genetic mapping. The resultant assembly comprises 10 chromosome-scale sequences that span a physical distance of 1,032.5 Mb and contain 35,892 predicted genes. Phylogenetic analysis of genome-wide SNPs in 60 acerola breeding materials revealed 3 distinct genetic groups. Overall, the genomic resource of acerola developed in this study, including its genome and gene sequences, genetic map, and phylogenetic relationship among breeding materials, will not only be useful for acerola breeding but will also facilitate genomic and genetic studies on acerola and related species.

    <p>This experiment was aimed at establishing the method of producing large fruits of loquat (<i>Eriobotrya japonica</i> (Thunb.) Lindl.). Using ‘Nagasakiwase’ (open field cultivation), ‘Mogi’ (open field cultivation), and ‘Natsutayori’ (plastichouse cultivation), we investigated the effects of different branch managements (only central shoot, central shoot + one lateral shoot, and central shoot + two lateral shoots) and flower cluster thinning rates (50%, 30%, and non-treatment) on fruit weight, branch structure and the canopy of the loquat. All cultivars in the treatment of a few bearing shoots had the largest diameters, fruit weight and number of leaves in both that and per fruit than other treatments. ‘Nagasakiwase’ at 50% and ‘Natsutayori’ at 30% flower cluster thinning rates had heavier fruit weights and larger bearing shoot diameters than other treatments. There was no significant difference in any of the treatments of ‘Mogi’. The relationship between the branch structure and fruit weight of all the cultivars was under r = 0.54, or uncorrelated. In ‘Mogi’ at 50% flower cluster thinning rate, plant coverage rate was low, and the sky factor area rate and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) were high, but the leaf area index was the same in all treatments. All branch managements of ‘Mogi’ had the same plant coverage rates, sky factor area rate and PAR. Indicating that in order to produce large loquat fruits, it is effective to have fewer branches and improved light from the receiving environment of the canopy with a low fruit cluster rate.</p>
