    Key message: Volatile compounds released from basil prime the tomato wound response by promoting jasmonic acid, mitogen-activated protein kinase, and reactive oxygen species signaling. Abstract: Within mixed planting systems, companion plants can promote growth or enhance stress responses in target plants. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain poorly understood. To gain insight into the molecular nature of the effects of companion plants, we investigated the effects of basil plants (Ocimum basilicum var. minimum) on the wound response in tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum cv. ‘Micro-Tom’) within a mixed planting system under environmentally controlled chamber. The results showed that the expression of Pin2, which specifically responds to mechanical wounding, was induced more rapidly and more strongly in the leaves of tomato plants cultivated with companion basil plants. This wound response priming effect was replicated through the exposure of tomato plants to an essential oil (EO) prepared from basil leaves. Tomato leaves pre-exposed to basil EO showed enhanced expression of genes related to jasmonic acid, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling after wounding stress. Basil EO also enhanced ROS accumulation in wounded tomato leaves. The wound response priming effect of basil EO was confirmed in wounded Arabidopsis plants. Loss-of-function analysis of target genes revealed that MAPK genes play pivotal roles in controlling the observed priming effects. Spodoptera litura larvae-fed tomato leaves pre-exposed to basil EO showed reduced growth compared with larvae-fed control leaves. Thus, mixed planting with basil may enhance defense priming in both tomato and Arabidopsis plants through the activation of volatile signaling.

    <p>A shortage of seedlings of <i>Peucedanum japonicum</i> Thunb. var. <i>latifolium</i> M.Hotta et Shiuchi in Minamisatsuma city of Kagoshima prefecture has become a serious problem recently because <i>P. japonicum</i> plants are popular as a healthy vegetable in islands of Kagoshima and Okinawa prefecture. In our interview with farmers and research, the reason for it was a low germination percentage of <i>P. japonicum</i> var. <i>latifolium</i>. The objective of our research was to clarify the temperature which increased germination percentages. One hundred seeds were put in 9 cm-diameter petri dishes with 10 mL distilled water, dishes were tested in 24hrs dark conditions in incubators. We also compared the germination of seeds with decortication and control treatments. In 24hrs constant temperature treatments (20, 25, and 30℃), about 40% of germination percentages were observed at 25℃ with decortication, and lower germination percentages were at 20℃. No germination was observed at 30℃. In 12/12hrs alternative temperature treatments(10/25℃, 20/25℃, 20/30℃, and 25/30℃), seeds could not germinate at 10/25℃, 20/30℃ and 25/30℃, and control at 20/25℃ treatments showed about 10% germination percentages, while decortication treatments at 15/20℃, 15/25℃ showed more than 20%, and more than 40% at 20/25℃, especially. Therefore, it was estimated that daily changes of temperature could affect germination severely, and for the increase of germination percentages, the temperature has to be adjusted 20/25℃ and it will be better with decortication.</p>

    This study was conducted to determine the effect of electric field (EF) treatment on improving postharvest quality and storage life of tomatoes, as well as to measure the polygalacturonase (PG) enzyme activity and the related gene expression. The fruit was continuously treated with alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) of field strength at 20 V cm-1until 3 weeks of storage at 10°C. While the fruit kept in an EF environment with target AC and DC at 0 V was served as a control. Tomato fruit were sampled during storage on weeks 1, 2 and 3 for evaluating skin color, firmness, weight loss, total acidity, pH, total soluble solids (TSS), sugar-acid ratio, ascorbic acid, and PG activity. The result showed that AC-EF treatment improved the firmness and L∗ value of tomato fruit throughout 3 weeks of storage. In conclusion, AC-EF had the potential to be used to extend the shelf-life and to suppress the PG expression level of tomato fruit.

    <p>Amino acids, an essential component that constitutes proteins <i>in vivo</i>, are also known to play as a signaling molecule that regulates various physiological functions in the living organism. Ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) are ligand-gated channels that specifically transmit amino acid signals in the central nervous system. Surprisingly, homologs of iGluRs, known as glutamate receptor-like channels (GLRs), were also found in higher plant genomes. However, their physiological roles or molecular functions are still obscure. Here, I review the latest research of plant GLRs and discuss their roles in plant signaling including environmental adaptation and cell-to-cell communications.</p>

    The yield of ‘Daikichi’, eddo cultivar (<i>Colocasia esculenta Schott</i> (L). var. <i>antiquorum Hubbard & Rehder</i>) cultivar generally grown in upland fields is increased by pot culture under flooded conditions. Here, we studied the effect of flooding on the photosynthesis in eddo under upland field conditions and flooded conditions in which flooding treatment started when two to three leaves emerged. In comparison with upland field conditions, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, amount of chlorophyll and photosynthetic rate were increased with the plant growth under flooded conditions. The increase in transpiration under flooded conditions prevented the rise of daytime leaf temperature thus preventing the decrease in photosynthetic rate that occurs under high temperature conditions.

    We studied the effects of flooding on the growth of taro (<i>Clocasia esculenta</i> Schott cv. ‘Daikichi’) in pot culture. Under flooded conditions, the upland cultivar ‘Daikichi’ was able to grow as well as the lowland cultivar ‘Taimo’. After about 120 days of flooding, ‘Daikichi’ petioles had elongated to 1.3–1.9 times those of the control. The transpiration rate had increased to about two times that of the control. Indeed, the yields of mother and daughter tubers of ‘Daikichi’ had increased, respectively, to 1.3–4.4 and 1.6–3.7 times those of the control. These results suggest that the upland cultivar ‘Daikichi’ is highly adaptive to flooding and as well as the lowland cultivar ‘Taimo’.
