The present study capitalized on a new research concept of L2 motivation based on Ushioda’s (2009) a person-in-context relational view, or a person-in-context theory (PICT). It also underscored spirituality in higher education. Presuming a combination of PICT and spirituality as a potently powerful agent in fostering L2 motivation, the study employed relevant English language teaching (ELT) in college for a one-semester period (16 weeks) with first-year students (N = 66). Four research aims were explored: (1) transformation of L2 learning strategy including motivation; (2) promotion of self-focused L2 use capability from a surface to deeper level; (3) emergent sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction through task engagement; (4) semantic characteristics of English messages in pursuit of self-maturity as a whole person. Statistical evidences indicated the effects of PICT-spirituality-amalgamated ELT in (1), (2), (3), including enhanced L2 motivation and self-identity-concerned L2 use. Also, sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction evidently emerged in task engagement. Real world-concerned messages were elicited in (4) through text mining and text analytics procedures.

This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of a new perspective in L2 motivation theory, and the essence of spirituality in higher education. A significant research focus was to examine how the conventional vis-à-vis the new aspect of L2 motivation conceptualizes language learners, while looking into the underpinnings L2 motivation theory addressed by Ema Ushioda. Another interest was to explore whether Ushioda’s motivation theory might resonate with spirituality education at a tertiary level. Noting these points, the objective of the current research is two-fold: (1) through text analysis, to elucidate conceptually salient orientations and emphatic points peculiar to conventional L2 motivation (research instrumentation), the new L2 motivation (Ushioda’s a person-in-context theory or PICT), and spirituality (concept and definition in higher education); and (2) based on the yielded results, to address pedagogical implications by utilizing a framework termed 1C2As for 4As (Context, Authenticity, Autonomy for Agency, Awareness, Accomplishment, Achievement). This framework gives a hint for organic amalgamation of PICT and spirituality. Concerning (1), by exercising quantitative analyses using SPSS Text Analysis, disparities of research emphasis were observed between the traditional L2 motivation and Ushioda’s L2 motivation. Meanwhile, similar and resonant orientation was found between Ushioda’s L2 motivation and college-based spirituality education. A salient commonality was the importance of fostering the inner self (e.g., belief, sense of value), together with the image of a well-balanced L2 learner (i.e., healthy character forming) as a whole human being. Focusing on these findings, in (2), the above-noted framework is presented as an implication for the revision of traditional L2 motivation instrumentation. This framework may also serve in integrating PICT and spirituality toward a new mode of English language teaching (ELT) in college.

When combining “Authenticity” and “College English as a Foreign Language" with focus on Wisdom Education, it is imperative to embrace the L2 learner’s well-assured self-growth through successful character formation. Forging personal beliefs and sense of values and maturing them for prudence, wise thinking, and sound judgment must be crucial. In contrast to the conventional mode of college EFL education anchored in linguistic and communicative competencies as well as in instrumental and utilitarian orientations, this book challenges the identification of what Self-Maturity and Language Maturity (Twin Maturities) really mean by drawing on an interdisciplinary research scope (i.e., weighing higher education, character education, foreign language education, ethics, morality, spirituality, public philosophy, etc.). It also introduces relevant teaching methods and classroom-based practice (EFL education) in use at a Japanese university, followed by twin maturities-aimed textbook development.

The present study capitalized on a new research concept of L2 motivation based on Ushioda’s (2009) a person-in-context relational view, or a person-in-context theory (PICT). It also underscored spirituality in higher education. To date, a plethora of L2 motivation research utilizing the traditional approach focusing on the learner and L2 competence, rather than the whole person and self-development, has been conducted. Meanwhile, little research has been implemented targeting Ushioda’s L2 motivation theory and spirituality with focus on Japanese college learners. A possible argument here is how spirituality-concerned ELT and L2 learning might be beneficial in generating L2 motivation and L2 use capability among college learners. Specifically, noting PICT and spirituality, it is worthwhile to explore the transformation of L2 strategy including the aspect of motivation, spirituality, person, and context. Presuming PICT and spirituality as potentially powerful agents in fostering L2 motivation, the study employed relevant English language teaching (ELT) in college for a one-semester period (16 weeks in 2016) with first-year students of a national university (N=66). Four research aims were explored: (1) transformation of L2 learning strategy including motivation; (2) promotion of self-focused L2 use capability from a surface-to-deeper level; (3) emergent sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction through task engagement; (4) semantic characteristics of English messages in pursuit of self-maturity as a whole person. Statistical evidences indicated the effects of PICT-spirituality-amalgamated ELT in (1), (2), (3), including enhanced L2 motivation and self-identity-concerned L2 use. Also, a sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction evidently emerged in task engagement. Real world-concerned messages were elicited in (4) through text mining and text analytics procedures.
