For. Plann. 57: 37~44, 2024 Experiments to produce dried fuel chips by natural drying of standing Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) trees using girdling treatment were performed. Ten trees were sampled from a 48-year-old stand for girdling that had been dried for 16 months, and five control trees without treatment were cut and chipped for each tree. The chip moisture contents (wet-based) were measured by the oven drying method and compared. Thus, nine girdling-treated trees had died from 3.5 to 13.5 months and could produce dried fuel chips with less than 42% moisture content. On the other hand, one girdling-treated tree had survived for 16 months, and the control trees showed high moisture content. Significant differences were observed between the moisture contents of died and survived trees by ANOVA. These results supported the feasibility of producing dried fuel chips from dead trees using girdling, which could be used for wood chip boilers.</p>

    <p>This study examined the effects of weeding schedules on shrub quantity and operation time for improvement cutting in 13 year old sugi (<i>Cryptomeria japonica</i>) stands. We also assessed the total operation time, which included both weeding and improvement cutting, with different weeding schedules. Then, we confirmed the state of competition between planted sugi trees and shrubs. As a result, shrub density was affected by weeding frequency, and shrub basal area and mean height were affected a year after the previous weeding. The shortest operation time was annual weeding, which was implemented annually from the 1st to 6th year after planting (11.9-12.6 h/ha). Three-time weeding was implemented in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years after planting and required about twice as much time as annual weeding (24.5-32.3 h/ha). The total operation time was longest with annual weeding (155.1-181.3 h/ha). Most of the sugi trees in this study site were not in competition with shrubs. We concluded that the operation time of improvement cutting increased with decreasing weeding frequency. However, the total operation time decreased with reducing weeding frequency. Additionally, improvement cutting may be omitted because of competition, and it is more effective for reducing initial silviculture costs.</p>

    <p>The objective of this study was to examine the competition between Japanese cedar (<i>Cryptomeria japonica</i>) and broad-leaved trees at different slope positions in a 5-year-old non-weeded cedar stand in Kagoshima University Forest, Southern Kyushu. We investigated the height growth of planted cedar and broad-leaved trees without weeding treatment stand, and analyzed the species composition and size of broad-leaved trees at different slope positions to compare 5 m strips. We examined the degree of height growth inhibition to compare the affects non-weeding treatment with complete yearly weeding treatment in adjoining even-aged stands. On the upper slope, the height of cedars in the stand without weeding was four-fifths that of cedars in the stand with weeding but was higher than that of broad-leaved trees. In contrast, on the lower slope, broad-leaved trees suppressed cedar height growth in the stand without weeding to 35% of that in the stand with weeding. On the basis of these results, we suggest that weeding in cedar stands can be reduced on upper slopes but is necessary on lower slopes.</p>

    Wood pellet production cost was estimated by means of a simulator developed in our previous study. All thinned trees were assumed to have been utilized as raw materials for wood pellets, and no trees were assumed to have been utilized as industrial timber or pulp chips. The estimations were performed based on 14 different scenarios to study the possibility of creating a pellet-mass-consumption society in Japan. These scenarios were designed to vary pellet production scales in an objective area of Yakushima, an island (500 km<SUP>2</SUP> with 14,000 residents). The utilization cost was significantly affected by the pellet production scale, resulting in approximately 40 yen/kg at the production scale of ca. 2,000 t/y. The cost decreased according to the production scale and reached a minimum of 25.8 yen/kg at 26,500 t/y. Compared with the mean prices of kerosene (Feb. 2010) and LPG (Dec., 2009) in the country, the minimum pellet price was cost competitive though coefficients of performance decreased when the pellet fuel was used. The ratio of energy consumed for pellet production to lower heat of combustion (LHV) of the pellet was 0.0276 at 82,700 t/y.

    A simulator was developed for a sequential process comprising from a tree felling process to a pellet distribution process to estimate cost and energy consumption of wood pellet production. Linear programming was used in the simulator to minimize the pellet production cost. An objective function of the pellet production cost was set to seek an optimal solution. In order to avoid influence of external economical factors such as timber demand and prices, an assumption was made in the algorism of the simulator as follows: all harvested trees will be utilized for a raw material of wood pellet, and no trees will be utilized as an industrial timber or pulp chip. The simulator was given default parameters, functions of pellet producing efficiency and information of energy demand and supply, which were obtained and summarized in our previous study. This is the first work to present a simulator for estimating cost and energy consumption of wood pellet production, which was developed for a sequential process comprising from a tree felling process to a pellet distribution process based on the forest management information.

    It is desirable to reduce the moisture content of woody biomass in order to use it for energy production. This study investigated the natural-drying process of Sugi (<I>Cryptomeria japonica</I>) branches as logging residues during their storage in a clear-cut field for producing fuelwood. Three natural-drying experiments were carried out; i) drying branches in summer, ii) drying in late autumn, iii) drying branches piled with a water-proof sheet cover. In the first experiment, the initial moisture content of the fresh branches was 146% on a dry-weight basis (d.b.). The final average moisture content of the branch residues had decreased to 40%d.b. after 66 days&rsquo; drying. Another drying experiment in late autumn showed that the average moisture content of the branches decreased from 120%d.b. to 51%d.b. during a 35-day drying period. Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of a water-proof sheet on the top of the branch piles. The average moisture content of branch piles with the sheet cover decreased from 115%d.b. to 35%d.b. during 35 days&rsquo; drying in late autumn. The sheet cover protected the branch piles from wetting down and was effective in decreasing the moisture content of the branches. Natural-drying of logging residues in the field would be an efficient low-cost drying method for woody biomass.

    We measured leaf loss caused by typhoons in four Hinoki (<I>Chamaecyparis obtusa</I>) plantations in northern Kagoshima Prefecture. In 2004, five typhoons passed through Kagoshima Prefecture and over nearby seas, Typhoon 18 was strongest; easterly and southwesterly winds impacted the forests with storm velocities of >40 m/s. The fallen branches lengths were mostly <10 cm; tree debris of &ge;20 cm dimension was relatively rare in four stands. The amounts of fallen leaves were 1.0 and 0.8 t/ha in stands P1 and P2 (located on slopes with southwestern exposure), respectively, and 0.7 and 0.2 t/ha in stands P3 and P4 (located on north-facing slopes), respectively. The mass of fallen branches in these stands amounted to only 7&sim;15% of the mass of fallen leaves. The difference in the amount of fallen leaves among stands were putatively attributed to factors that influenced wind velocity, such as slope direction and presence or absence sheltering mountains on the windward sides. The leaf biomasses before the typhoon impact were estimated to be 13.8 and 15.5 t/ha in stands P1 and P2, respectively. The ratios of fallen leaf amount to leaf biomass before the typhoon were 7.5 and 5.1% in stands P1 and P2, respectively. Thus, defoliating damage by typhoon impact in Hinoki stands can occur, even in the absence of conspicuous damage such as trunk breakage.

    The way of using woody biomass varies in burning, producing ethanol, gasification and so on. Some researches have been made for cultivating and producing short rotation trees as an energy source. Woody biomass such as willow or hybrid poplar is grown in European and North American countries. In that area, sugarcane harvester is used for harvesting woody biomass production. While in the south-west islands of Japan, sugarcane is grown as one of the main crops and many harvesters are used. Also, considerable area is expected for woody biomass production. There should be big potential to grow short rotation trees for energy source in that area under the subtropical climate. In this study, the production possibility of woody biomass in south-west islands of Japan is discussed. For testing the adjustability with the sugarcane production, the cutting resistances of some selected species were measured using the cutting knife of the sugarcane harvester.

    Since 1972, an experimental management system for Japanese oak (<i>Quercus mongolica</i> var. <i>grosseserrata</i>) has been studied in a natural Japanese oak forest, approximately 200ha in area, in the Kyushu University Forest in Hokkaido. The management system was based on the clearcutting system in tongue-shaped blocks surrounded by shelterbelts; rotation was 150 years. The silvicultural process in this management system was designed to produce high-quality timber. For 30 years between 1973 and 2002, the number of first-year oak seedling established by the silvicultural process averaged 55,000 per ha per year. For 30 years between 1972 and 2002, the area managed averaged 9.11 ha per year. For 30-years, the timber volume derived from thinning and final cutting averaged 198m^3 per year. The revenue obtained by selling this timber averaged 892,000 yen per year. The cost of silvicultural process averaged 557,000 yen per year, excluding the costs of staff and other factors owing to the Kyushu University Forest. Thus the average net revenue per year was 335,000 yen for the 30-years.

    The opinions of Kagoshima City residents regarding the costs of electric power generated by bio-fuel were surveyed. The questionnaire survey was conducted in March 2001 on five hundred persons (families) who were sampled systematically from a telephone directory. One hundred sixty-three persons responded to the questionnaire (a response rate of 33 percent). About 95 percent of the respondents were interested in environmental problems. Recognition rates of various natural energy sources (listed in order, starting with the most widely recognized) were as follows: wind power (88.3%), solar power (85.8%), hydro-power (83.9%), geo-thermal power (74.5%) and biomass power (27.6%). Ninetyfive percent of respondents answered that we should reduce the use of fossil fuels for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. The alternate energy source most widely thought to be promising was solar power (73.6%), followed by wind power (63.8%), then geo-thermal power, and coastal wave power. Only 29.4% of respondents placed expectations on biomass energy. About 75 percent of respondents were willing to pay an additional charge for electricity generated from renewable energy sources. Comparing the results with public response to the non-government subsidy "Green Power System" operated by private electric power companies, it was found that residents in Kagoshima City were 2.5 times more willinq to pay extra for the use of natural energy sources.

    The purpose of this study was to measure the trunk-MOE (modulus of elasticity of a tree trunk) of Cryptomeia in the forest stand and to examine its use as forestry management information. First we analyzed the relationships between the trunk-MOE measured by the tree-bending test and the tree growth factors (tree height and DBH) in the Obi-sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) young plantation stand. Then, we proposed a DBH-based thinning method to control trunk-MOE in the stand, and discussed the possible application of trunk-MOE as forest management information. There was a weak negative correlation between the DBH and the trunk-MOE in 19- and 23-year-old stands, which showed the formation of mature wood during this period and the reproductivity of the measurement. The DBH-based thinning was suggested to result in the change of the average trunk-MOE in a stand and little affect coefficient of variation of trunk-MOE. The results indicate that it might be possible to produce timber satisfying user-side demands by using the stand trunk-MOE as management information.

    An alternative silvicultural or management scheme for the clear cutting system in Kyushu University Forests in Miyazaki became necessary because of the loss of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) and hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantation trees. This study analyzed the growth of planted trees and deer damages from monitoring results carried out in both 1990 and 1997, and examined the forest management alternatives. As a result, there has been a substantial decrease in the numbers of plantation trees. Furthermore, many planted trees have suffered much deer damages such as peeling of stem bark that drastically lowered the merchantable log value. Considering these situations, two management alternatives were proposed: 1) Silvicultural operations are to be performed only on selected healthy trees expected to survive until the final cutting. Other damaged trees would be left only for maintaining the stand density. 2) The management objective would be changed to enhance the growth of invaded broad leaf trees and to develop a mixture forest instead of the present forest to produce medium quality timber.

    We calculated three topographical factors (effective relief, topographical exposure and slope-center angle) with the "Digital Map 50-m grid", a digital elevation model (DEM) published by the Geographical Survey Institute, Japan. The objectives of this study were to show new algorithms for the calculation of the topographical factors from DEM, and to evaluate their accuracy. We proposed new algorithms for the topographical exposure and the slope-center angle. Both topographical factors measured on topographical maps and calculated from DEM were compared. The Digital Map 50-m grid data were resampled by the cubic convolution interpolation. The root mean squared (RMS) error for the elevation value of the DEM was 7.15m and gave good agreement with the theoretical value (7.2m). The RMS error of the effective relief was 8.61m, the topographical exposure was 27.39 degrees, and the slope-center angle was 13.57 degrees. The correlations between the errors of elevation on DEM and the errors of each topographical factor were also examined. The errors of elevation on DEM correlated positively with the errors of the topographical exposure and the slope-center angle, and negatively with those of the effective relief.

    It has proved difficult to monitor the state of plantations by field observations due to the high costs involved, although the extent of unsuccessful plantations has been increasing. The objective of this study was to develop a method to estimate the survival rates of planted trees in young Sugi (<i>Cryptomeria japonica</i>) and Hinoki (<i>Chamaecyparis obtusa</i>) plantations by analyzing LANDSAT TM (Thematic Mapper) data. Our hypothesis was that the survival rate of planted trees, which was regarded as closely correlated with canopy coverage of planted trees, could be represented by the digital number of bands or intensity of some index of remote sensing data. The study sites were young plantations (4 to 12 years old) in Kyushu University Forests in Miyazaki which is located in southern Kyushu, Japan (32°22′10″N, 131°10′40″E), within the cool-temperate deciduous zone. Plantations were divided into aspect classes as the minimum units of this study. The method had two main parts. 1) Interpreting survival rates of planted trees on a pair of aerial photographs. 2) Analyzing the relationships between TM data and the survival rates of trees under two models, MODEL I using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and MODEL II using the TM band 3 digital number (DN) for detecting the difference in spectra between planted trees and grass. The results showed that: 1) there were big differences in the survival rates according to aspect, and northern slopes had relatively high survival rates compared with southern slopes. 2) It was difficult to estimate the survival rates of planted trees by NDVI. 3) The relationship between survival rates and DN in TM band 3 showed strong negative correlation with a coefficient of determination of 0.643. Thus, DN in TM band 3 appears to be preferable for estimating the survival rates of planted trees. This study thus indicated that TM band 3 approach would be the most effective monitoring method for plantations in inaccessible mountainous regions.

    <p>This study identified the cost-effective weeding schedules for reducing weeding cost. First, we used a Monte Carlo method to simulate 7-year-old sugi (<i>Cryptomeria Japonica</i>) mean height and cumulative weeding operation time under different combinations of weeding timing and frequency from 0 to 6 times after planting. Then, we calculated operation time per sugi mean height to express cost-effectiveness. Moreover, to evaluate the stability of the cost-effectiveness, we calculated coefficient of variation for sugi mean height, cumulative operation time and operation time per sugi height. Each coefficient of variation was lower when weeding frequency was equal to or more than three times. The operation time per sugi height decreased when weeding was conducted in the first or second year after planting. We conclude that the three-treatment weeding frequency including the first- or second-year weeding is more effective weeding for the reduction of weeding costs.</p>

    It has been necessary for a stable fuel wood chip supply to wood chip boilers. Therefore, the objectives of this study were precision of simple measurement method for the fuel wood chip's moisture contents and actual states of moisture contents of supplied chips in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The simple moisture content measurement method for only Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) chip with bark was calculating moisture content from bulk density filled in a stool with 22.8 liter. Wood chip samples were taken from 26 chip delivery trucks and measured by both the simple measurement method and kiln dried method. As the results, it was possible to measure the moisture contents by the simple method precisely. The wood chip samples showed less than 50% moisture contents which were acceptable moisture content for wood ship boilers. However, it would be necessary for stirring chips in sialo to reduce unevenness of chip's moisture contents.

    Japan has started to train the Japanese foresters with the objective of establishing a stable supply system of domestic timber and dissemination of knowledge technology on forest and forestry. In its advanced case, literature and interview surveys were conducted on the mechanism of intermediary work system of timber sales by the state government in Baden-Württemberg State (BW state), Germany. The BW state has the same area as the Kyushu region, but its annual timber production volume is about twice that of Kyushu. In the state of BW, the State Forest Law requires appropriate management obligation for all forests and provisional and support obligation by the state government to private forest owners who do not have experts on forest and forestry are set up, and private forest by forester's advice and support services to management are being implemented. Although it is necessary to consider the influence of the competition restriction prohibition law, as of the year 2018 as well, private forest owners of 100 ha or less is also engaged in sales agency business of timbers. Analysis of the statistical data of the support work from 2006 to 2015 revealed that about 60% of the private forest area was under service of the BW state government.

    <p>A Biomass CHP system was completed by Bamboo Energy Co., Ltd. in Nankan Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, in March 2019, as the first full-scale Organic Rankine Cycle in Japan using bamboo for biomass. It has a capacity of about 1 MW electricity, 2.8 MW thermal oil supply, and 4 MW warm water supply, with total energy efficiency of about 70%. The well-known difficulty of burning bamboo has been successfully solved by burning it with bark based on fundamental research for a long time. In this report the development from pilot tests to full scale plant is outlined.</p>

    The thinning effects for old Sugi(Cryptomeria japonica) stand were analyzed for 20 years from 70 to 90-years old on the experimental plot in Shiraga-dake, Kagoshima Prefecture. The thinning intensity was decided by the percentage of the mean distance between stems to the mean height of the upper-trees. The four thinning intensities, that is control(unthinned), weak(13%), medium(15%) and heavy(17%), were conducted in the experimental plot. The medium and heavy thinned areas have the larger growth of the diameter and total yield volume than the weak- and unthinned areas. Therefor, the higher ratio than 15% shows the thinning effects for the old sugi stand was concluded.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the availability of the prediction method for log production numbers in each diameter class of a 14-year-old kunugi (Quercus acutissima Carr.) stand based on average relative stem curve. By using the relative-diameter-series of 19 kunugi trees, the average relative stem curve described by an equation of the third degree was obtained as follows; $ y = 0.3833940x^3 - 0.3589740x^2 - 1.1236385x $ Log numbers in each diameter class were calculated using the stem curve equation. Both actual and predicted distributions of log numbers were examined by the test of goodness of fit. The null hypothesis that stated two distributions had no difference was accepted at a 0.01 level of significance. In addition, the average top-end diameters of two log number distributions were almost equal. As a result, it is possible to predict log numbers in each diameter class of kunugi based on the average relative stem curve. This method is available for practical use.

    A spacing experiment for Japanese oak (Quercus mongolica var. grosseserrata) wlth Nelder's design have been studied at the Kyushu University Forest in Hokkaido, since 1975. The oak seedlings were planted according to systematic spacings which were 20 levels varying gradually from 40,816 to 1,086 seedlings per hectare with concentric circular arcs (22 in number) and spokes (41 in number). In 1992 when the planted oak seedlings were 18-year-old. DBH, crown diameter, total height and clear length of the survival trees were measured. Based on the results obtained from analyzing the relationships between planting density and the mean values of each block, the optimum planting density should be 7,241 seedlings per hectare.

    日本の木材輸出は2013年以降増加傾向にあり,それに伴い木材の合法性や持続可能性を証明する木材産地証明が求められるようになっている.木材産地証明により,盗伐や違法伐採の抑制や,木質バイオマスの間伐材証明も可能となり,持続可能な林業経営が促進される.木材産地証明には,従来よりQRコードやRFIDタグを利用した手法が用いられてきたが,タグの装着作業や製材過程での張り直しなど,作業の煩雑化やコスト増加など課題が多いことがわかっている.その解決のため,丸太木口画像を個体識別に利用する手法を提案する.丸太の特徴量として木口の輪郭,年輪,髄,節の位置や形状,向きを自動抽出し利用することを検討しており,本発表では,節を模した疑似マーカーを用いた個体識別の有効性を評価する.疑似マーカーを木口画像にランダムに添付し,その形状と座標情報から事前に登録しておいた木口画像の特徴点と照合し,その精度を評価する.

    現在,南九州では森林の伐採活動が活発になっており,伐採地の把握や管理が重要となっている。しかし,現地調査等で伐採状況の把握を行うと,多大な労力と時間を要する問題がある。そのため,伐採状況の検出をリモートセンシング技術を利用して行うことが出来れば,現地調査を行わずに伐採地を把握できる可能性がある。そこで本研究では,二時期の航空写真から得られた森林の施業前後のDSMデータを比較して差分画像から施業状況を検出する。発表では,二時期のDSM差分画像からの伐採検出精度について報告する。

    林業の成長産業化を進めるにあたり,森林域での通信環境の確保が重要となってくる。電波は遮蔽物があれば,遮断および回折が生じるため,森林内は開空地域と比べて伝搬距離が短くなると考えられる。しかしながら,これまでに森林内における電波伝搬に関する報告は限られている。樹木密度の違いは森林内の電波伝搬に大きく影響すると考えられるが,どの程度電波伝搬を阻害するかは明らかになっていない。そこで本研究の目的は,樹木密度の違いが森林内の電波伝搬にどのように影響するかを明らかにすることである。

    シキミ,ヒサカキ,サカキといった枝物は,近年国産の需要が高まってきており,有望な特用林産物と考えられている。  また,サカキは陰樹であり林冠下での栽培に適している。このことから,スギやヒノキの林冠下ではサカキ,畑ではシキミ,ヒサカキを栽培することによって,人工林用材生産と枝物栽培を組み合わせた枝物複合経営を可能にする。枝物複合経営は,放棄地の活用及び連年での収入を得ることのできる,安定的な林業経営に繋がると期待されている。しかし,枝物は栽培技術は注目されているものの,複合経営という観点からの研究はない。そこで本研究では,鹿児島県の枝物専業農家に聞き取り調査を行い,枝物複合経営の経営モデルを構築することを目的とした。

    持続可能な森林経営を行う上で,初期育林コストを削減することが重要である。特に,下刈りコストの削減が求められてきた。下刈りを省いた場合,下刈りコストは削減される。その一方で,下刈りを省くことにより雑木が繁茂し,除伐のコストが増加する可能性がある。しかし,下刈り回数の削減が除伐コストに与える影響は明らかにされていない。そこで本発表では,鹿児島県に設置された下刈り試験地を対象に,下刈り回数の削減が雑木の侵入状況と除伐作業時間に与える影響を検証した。
