    <p>While it has been suggested that advections of coastal waters stimulate plankton standing stocks and productivity in the oligotrophic Kuroshio, there is still limited information. Here, we explore the source and process of coastal waters advected to the Kuroshio using particle-tracking experiments with a high-resolution coastal ocean model. Advections of coastal waters to the Kuroshio were stimulated by encountering frequent disturbances such as meandering and eddy near the Kuroshio front. The source of coastal waters advected to the Kuroshio were the largest from southern Kyushu throughout the year and from the East China Sea during winter to spring. Zooplankton biomass fluxes across the Kuroshio front were equivalent to 2 to 44% of those across the Kuroshio path. The estimated fluxes across the Kuroshio front were comparable to zooplankton biomass increase by their growth rates reported in the Kuroshio. These results suggest that the coastal zooplankton community advected to the Kuroshio supports food requirements for the fish community in the Kuroshio.</p>

    Internal tides are ubiquitously generated from disturbances between barotropic tides and bottom topography in stratified oceans. Incoherence is routinely considered as non-stationary phase discrepancy between internal and astronomical tides. Internal tides, especially incoherent constituents, contribute substantial energy to dissipation and turbulent mixing. Using ∼8-month near-full-depth moored current observations, we investigated internal tides in the Tokara Strait, where the Kuroshio exits the East China Sea. Semidiurnal internal tides, especially the M2 internal tides, dominate the diurnal internal tides by approximately one-order of magnitude. We decomposed the bandpass-filtered tidal currents into coherent and incoherent constituents, both of which presented a spring–neap cycle; however, the former was largely coupled with local barotropic tides, while the latter had an incoherent phase. The coherent semidiurnal internal tides were intensified and had larger variability near the bottom; nevertheless, the intensity and variability of incoherent internal tides decreased with depth. These results suggest that the incoherent internal tides are exogenous and are possibly affected by the background flow field during propagation. The mean incoherence (above 54 % for both semidiurnal and diurnal internal tides) was expectedly higher than the global mean (∼44 %), implying a robust effect of nonlinear Kuroshio-tide interactions. Moreover, the relationship between the variability of the incoherence and the north–south shift of the Kuroshio further revealed the impact of the background flow intensity variation on internal tides. A ray tracing model demonstrated different refraction indices during the propagation of internal tides, leading to converged (diverged) ray paths in the mooring when the Kuroshio was at the northern (southern) axis position, thus explaining the differential incoherence caused by the variability of the Kuroshio.

    <p> The correlation between the secondary undulations and long ocean waves was investigated using the sea-level data observed at five stations in the west coast of southern Kyushu. As a result, it was suggested that the monitoring of the ocean long waves at Meshima (Nakano-shima) Island is effective in predicting the occurrence of the secondary undulations at Oshima (Makurazaki) fishing port. The large secondary undulations with the maximum total amplitude of 352cm were observed at Oshima fishing port on March 29, 2020. At that time, the amplification ratio of the ocean long wave at the Oshima fishing port was 8.2.</p>

    <p> In order to construct a monitoring network of ocean long waves off west of Kyushu, we analyzed the sea-level data simultaneously observed at six points in winter 2019. During the observational period, the secondary undulations occurred at Oshima fishing port with the periods of 24.3 minutes and 12.0 minutes and at Makurazaki fishing port with the periods of 16.8 minutes and 12.3 minutes. They became large when the ocean long waves are large off west of Kyushu. In addition, it was suggested that the sea-level fluctuations with the periods of 8-32 minutes at Meshima Island becomes a more useful indicator than those at Fukue and Uji Islands to monitor the long waves that cause the large secondary wave at Oshima Port. Furthermore, the sea-level fluctuations at Uji and Nakano-shima Islands were confirmed to be effective for monitoring the long waves causing to large secondary undulations at Makurazaki Port.</p>

    <p> Field observations of ocean long waves propagating eastward were made in winter to early spring of 2012 and 2018 in relation to the occurrence of secondary undulation at the west coast of Kyushu. The period of secondary undulations at Nagasaki, Sakitsu, Kami-koshiki Island and Makurazaki were confirmed from the observational results. Moreover, it was suggested that the field observations of sea-level variations at Fukuejima Island and Meshima Island (Uttchima Island and Nakano-shima Island) are useful to monitor ocean long waves causing secondary undulation at Nagasaki and Kami-koshiki Island (Makurazaki).</p>

    <p> Numerical simulations of velocity and energy potential of tidal currents in consideration of density stratification were carried out at Oshima Strait, Nagashima Strait, and Kuronoseto Strait around Kagoshima. The monthly mean values of velocity and energy potential were trend to be larger in winter than in summer. The decrease in tidal current velocity in summer may be due to the tidal energy being consumed to weaken density stratification. The annual mean value of extractable energy was 1.0 MWh in Oshima Strait, 4.1 MWh in Nagashima Strait and 12.8 MWh in Kuronoseto Strait.</p>

    &nbsp;Secondary undulation during the summer season is caused by typyoons. Therefore, in harbors and the like, sea level rises dut to overlapping secondary undulation on storm surges and risk of causing disasters such as flooding becomes high. Also, as this secondary undulation may become the maximum deviation after storm surge, it is important to know its characteristics. In this study, we perfomed numerical simulation at the Kominato fishing port of Amami Oshima Island where typoon frequently invasion, and attempted to reproduce secondary undulation that caused by typhoon passage June 18 to 20, 2012. As a result, secondary unduration that occurred after June 19, although qualitative, also appeared in the calculation results. From this result, we clarified the mode characteristics of the period of 6 minutes and the propagation characteristics of the ocean long wave, which is the cause of the secondary unduration.

    &nbsp;The properties of the sea levels at Kushimoto and Uragami were examined using the data of current velocity measured at the station off Cape Shiono-misaki for one year. The high correlation with the current velocity concluded that the sea-level difference between Kushimoto and Uragami is a good index to monitor the Kuroshio velocity south of the cape. By analyzing the data of the sea-level difference, it was shown that the absolute velocity of the Kuroshio averaged for 10 years is 96.0 cm/s. Moreover, it was suggested that the Kuroshio velocity has an interannual variation at a period of 2.2 years and a seasonal variation with the maximum in August and the minimum in February.

    &nbsp;We have measured a time series of current velocity off Cape Shiono-misaki from April 20, 2016 to April 20, 2017 with a moored ADCP in order to investigate the characteristics of variation of the Kuroshio current in relation to ocean current power generator. The Kuroshio has taken a non-large-meander path for the measurement period. It is clarified from the measurement results that the currents at a depth of about 50m are characterized by the properties that the averaged velocity for one year is 100cm/s and the current direction is almost constant in the direction between the east and east-southeast.

    &nbsp;Secondary undulations caused by meteorological disturbances over the East China Sea are frequently observed in sea areas around the west coast of Kyushu Island. In this study, numerical analyses were carried out to figure out a relationship between propagation paths of atmospheric pressure wave over the East China Sea and characteristics of sea level fluctuation off the west coast of Kyushu Island. As the result, it is clarified that a behavior of water surface waves caused by atmospheric pressure disturbances strongly depends on incident position and angle of a pressure wave to the Okinawa Trough. A propagation path of the pressure wave also exerts a significant influence on timing that peaks of sea level fluctuation arise in the sea area off Meshima Island, Uji Island, Nagasaki, Kami-Koshiki and Makurazaki. In particular it is possible that a peak of sea level fluctuation in nearshore area off Kyushu Island comes around 4 hours before that around Meshima island located on the west side of the Okinawa Trough.

    &nbsp;Direct measurement of sea level at Meshima Island during February 10 &ndash; March 27 in 2012 and at Uji Island during February 1 &ndash; March 31 in 2016 were made in relation to the occurrence of secondary undulation at the west coast of Kagoshima. We found that the secondary undulations with the periods of 12 and 24 minutes at Koshiki Island and the period of 16 minutes at Makurazaki are dominant. Moreover, it was suggested that the monitoring of sea-level variation with the periods of 8 &ndash; 32 minutes at Meshima Island and Uji Island is useful to the prediction of the approach of long-period wave to cause the secondary undulation at Koshiki Island and Makurazaki.

    &nbsp;The power potential of tidal currents around Nagashima Strait were examined in relation to tidal current power generation using the results of ADCP observation and numerical simulation. We found the tidal current power of 2.2 kW/m<sup>2</sup> in the Nagashima Strait and 6.0 kW/m<sup>2</sup> in the Kuronoseto Strait. Moreover, it was shown from the results of the numerical simulation for the arrayed 20 tidal current turbines that the daily mean value of extractable tidal energy is 447 MW in the Nagashima Strait and 540 MW in the Kuronoseto Strait. In addition, it was suggested that the amplitudes of tidal currents in the Nagashima Strait and the Kuronoseto Strait decrease 6 cm/s and 11 cm/s, respectively, because of the arrayed turbines.
