    <p>In the third part of this study on the genus <i>Meleonoma</i> Meyrick in the family Oecophoridae, four species are treated. Two of them are new species (<i>Meleonoma tsushimaensis</i> sp. nov., <i>M. yaeyamaensis</i> sp. nov.), and one species (<i>M. robustispina</i> Wang, 2020) treated as <i>M</i>. sp. 4 in Kitajima and Sakamaki (2021), is a newly recorded species from Japan. The female genitalia of <i>M. robustispina</i> Wang are described here for the first time. In this part, adult specimens of these species, their wing venations, and male and female genitalia are illustrated in detail. Since Part I of this study (Kitajima and Sakamaki, 2020) dealt with eight species, Part II (Kitajima and Sakamaki, 2021) with seven species, except for <i>M. robustispina</i> (treated as <i>M</i>. sp. 4), and this part deals with four species, the total number of <i>Meleonoma</i> species from Japan consists of 19 species. A taxonomic key for these 19 species was presented in this part.</p>

    <p>Following an earlier report of an infestation in Amami Island, Japan, the exotic scale insect <i>Aulacaspis yasumatsui</i> was confirmed to attack <i>Cycas revoluta</i> in Okinawa Island, Japan. Plants damaged by <i>A. yasumatsui</i> were localized in two adjacent villages in the northern part of Okinawa Island, far from the island's main port facilities. The damaged area was localized compared with the earlier infestation in Amami Island. Interviews with a resident and a facility manager revealed that damage had become visible in 2020 and 2021. Two months after the application of an insecticide spray, there was no sign of new leaves being attacked and no abnormalities were visible in all previously attacked plants. Chemical control and the removal of damaged leaves are labor-intensive procedures; therefore, control methods that are easier to undertake need to be established.</p>

    <p>In 2022, mass yellowing of <i>Cycas revoluta</i> leaves caused by a scale occurred on Amami-Oshima Island. We identified the scale as <i>Aulacaspis yasumatsui</i>, a worldwide cycad pest. The occurrence was reported as the first record of the <i>A. yasumatsui</i> in Japan. In this paper, we report on the identification details and the survey on the distribution and damage in the Amami Islands. We identified the scale based on its morphological characteristics and then confirmed the identification based on its nucleotide sequences of COI and COII regions of mitochondrial DNA. The nucleotide sequence of COI barcode region (630 bp) in our sample from Amami-Oshima Island is 100% identical to that from Fujian Province in China previously reported. The scale was found in Amami City, Tatsugo Town, Yamato Village and Uken Village. In<i> C. revoluta</i>, where this scale occurs, the leaves ranged from those with no yellowing to those with all leaves yellowed. Severe damage, such as yellowing of all the leaves, and mass yellowing was concentrated in near the Naze Port in Amami City.</p>

    <p>In the second part of this study on the Oecophorid genus <i>Meleonoma</i> Meyrick, eight species are treated. A new species group, the <i>M.</i> <i>badia</i>-group, is proposed in this study.     <p><i>Difflugia biwae</i> Kawamura, 1918 has been redescribed. Here, the neotype of <i>D. biwae</i>, which was newly collected from its type locality, Lake Biwa, is designated to the species to clarify its taxonomic status. Morphometric characterization of <i>D. biwae</i> was performed. A statistically significant correlation between body length and shell collar diameter was identified in the population of the Lake Biwa, but this correlation was not significant in the population from the Mulan Lake. The PCA scatterplot indicates that the Mulan Lake population could be a separate taxon identified by shorter protuberance length and body length.</p>

    Six Japanese species of the genus Lecithocera Herrich-Schäffer, 1853 (Gelechioidea: Lecithoceridae) are treated: L. chersitis Meyrick, 1918; L. daebuensis Park &amp; Lee, 1999; L. duplicata (Gozmány, 1978); L. tridentata Wu &amp; Liu, 1993; L. fascimaculata sp. nov.; and L. fuscialaris sp. nov.. One species, L. duplicata (Gozmány, 1978), is reported for the first time from Japan. The male and female genitalia, wing venation, and adult appearance are illustrated for all the species.

    A long period of ant sampling has been conducted in Biological Education and Research Forest (BERF), Universitas Andalas, West Sumatra, Indonesia by deploying several methods i.e. direct hand collection in rotten logs, at flowering plants and at bird nests, Quadra Protocol for sampling diurnal and nocturnal ground ants and subterranean trap for soil ants. A total of 100 ant species which taxonomically grouped into 41 genera, 15 tribes and eight subfamilies resulted from this study. Myrmicinae became subfamily with the most species recorded (46 species), after the Formicinae with 28 species and Ponerinae with 11 species. On the other hand, the rest subfamilies were represented with less species e.g. Dolichoderinae (6 species), Dorylinae (3 species), Pseudomyrmicinae (3 species), Ectatommine (2 species) and Ambliponinae (1 species). Pheidole was genus with the most species recorded (17 species) followed by Crematogaster (7 species) and Polyrhachis (6 species). Quadra Protocol became the most effective method to record ant species in this study (42 species), subsequently followed by purposive hand collection method (40 species), subterranean trap (10 species), direct collection in rotten logs (8 species), observation at flowering plants (8 species) or collection from within bird nests (4 species). Despite the robustness of inventory produced from this study, it is indicated that BERF area still holds more ant species that are not recorded by research done so far.

    <p>The genus<i> Meleonoma </i>comprises 93 species. Wang <i>et al.</i> (2020) divided these into eight species groups. In Japan, nineteen species of this genus have been recorded and they are divided into six species groups, including two new species groups. The revision is divided into three parts. In this part, eight species are reported, of which three species, <i>Meleonoma milichopis</i> sp. nov., <i>M. persimilis</i> sp. nov., <i>M. ryukyuensis</i> sp. nov., are described as new to science, and one species, <i>M. facialis</i> Li & Wang, 2002, is redescribed as new to Japan. The adult specimens, wing venations, male and female genitalia are illustrated in detail.</p>

    <p>The current arthropod pest fauna on avocado plant in Kagoshima prefecture is investigated</p><p>in seven places of its production (Hioki City, Ibusuki City, Tarumizu City, Kagoshima City,</p><p>Minami-satsuma City, Amami City and Setouchi Town) from 2015 to 2019.     <p>ネマルハキバガ科はキバガ上科の中でも最も分類が困難なグループの一つであり,寄主の記録がある種は既知種の10%以下に限られる.我々は鹿児島県の温室においてウンシュウミカン <i>Citrus unshiu</i> (Swingle) Marcowicz の早期落果を引き起こした小蛾5個体を精査し,うち4個体が日本未記録のイナーナネマルハキバガ(新称) <i>Lateantenna inana</i> (Butler, 1881) n. comb.,残りの1個体がウスオビネマルハキバガ<i> L. decolor</i> (Meyrick, 1907) であることをDNAバーコーディングと成虫形態から確認した.また,広島県においてカキノキ<i> Diospyros kaki</i> Thunberg の樹皮下から得られた小型蛾類の飼育により,<i>L. decolor</i> がカキノキの形成層も摂食することを確認した.さらに本論文では,<i>L. inana</i> に加えて,<i>Lateantenna scotia</i> Turner, 1947 n. comb. も <i>Blastobasis</i> Zeller, 1855 から <i>Lateantenna</i> Amsel, 1968 へと属の移動を行った.</p>

    In butterflies and moths, the wing margins are
    fringed with specialized scales that are typically longer than common scales. In the hindwings of some small moths, the posterior margins are fringed with particularly long filamentary scales. Despite the small size of these moth wings, these scales are much longer than those of large moths and butterflies. In the current study, photography of the tethered flight of a small moth, Phthorimaea operculella, revealed a wide array composed of a large number of long filamentary scales. This array did not become disheveled in flight, maintaining a coherent sheet-like structure during wingbeat. Examination of the mor-
    phology of individual scales revealed that each filamentary scale consists of a proximal stalk and distal branches. Moreover, not only long scales but also shorter scales of various lengths were found to coexist in each small section of the wing margin. Scale branches were ubiquitously and densely distributed within the scale array to form a mesh-like architecture similar to a nonwoven fabric. We propose that possible mechanical interactions among branched filamentary scales, mediated by these branches, may contribute to maintaining a coherent sheet-like structure of the scale array during wingbeat.

    The whitefly <i>Bemisia tabaci</i> (Gennadius) is an important economic pest, being a vector of <i>Tomato yellow leaf curl virus</i> (TYLCV). In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effect of two insecticides on TYLCV transmission by whiteflies. Tomato plants pretreated with pyrifluquinazon or dinotefuran (0 and 7 days before inoculation) were significantly less infected with TYLCV than untreated plants, while plants pretreated 14 day before inoculation did not show any difference. In contrast, the survival rates of viruliferous whitefly on pretreated plants 0, 7, 14 days before inoculation were significantly lower than those on untreated plants. These results indicate that sprays of these insecticides at 7-day intervals were effective in inhibiting the incidence of TYLCV transmission by whiteflies.

    The West Indian sweet potato weevil, <i>Euscepes postfasciatus</i> Fairmaire, was distributed only on Nansei and Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands in Japan until 2008, when the weevil was found for the first time in Ibusuki City, which previously regarded as a weevil-free area. In this study, we used epidemiological approaches to determine how the weevil population in Ibusuki City was established. We conducted spatial distribution analysis and case–control studies based on survey data gathered from 270 farmers who cultivated sweet potato in 2008. Weevils were present at 46 sweet potato (<i>Ipomoea batatas</i>) cultivation sites and four blue morning glory (<i>Ipomoea indica</i>) growing sites. The weevil infestation rate was higher in sweet potato plants than in wild host plants. Weevil infestation was strongly associated with the use of tuber trench silo storage (odds ratio, 4.45). The association with silo storage suggested that the tuber storage silos provided an overwintering refuge for the weevil. The case–control study also revealed that cultivation without pesticides and for home use were associated with weevil infestation. Activities such as the transfer of tubers or leaving tubers in the field may expand the distribution of the weevil population over a wider area.

    To explore new characteristics never previously used diagnostically in certain insect groups, we analyzed female genital shapes in four species of egg parasitoid wasps, Trichogramma (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae), by using elliptic Fourier descriptors. Species of this genus have hitherto been identified solely on the basis of male genitalia. Thus, we tried to distinguish four species of Trichogramma from each other using only female characteristics. Although principal component analysis of the standardized Fourier coefficients obtained from the contours of the female genitalia revealed complete isolation of T. japonicum from the other three examined species, the first and second principal component score distributions of T. chilonis, T. dendrolimi, and T. papilionis overlapped. Nevertheless, these three species could be differentiated each other by canonical discriminant analysis of the coefficients. Redrawn contours along the axes of canonical variables showed that interspecific shape differences of female genitalia were more subtle than intraspecific ones. A series of such analyses represents a good example of how elliptic Fourier descriptors can be used in taxonomic studies.

    Recent developments in geometric morphometrics enable us to precisely examine morphological variations in the shape and size of organisms, including insect species. We review modern well-established morphometric approaches frequently used in entomology. Three non-mutually exclusive technical morphometrics methods are briefly explained: 1) multivariate morphometrics, 2) superimposition and thin-plate spline analysis, and 3) outline analysis. The latter two approaches are generally referred to as geometric morphometrics. We then review recent literature relevant to geometric morphometrics and consider the application of these approaches in the context of systematic and evolutionary studies of insects.

    The feeding, fecundity and mortality of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) on the chrysanthemum cultivar 'Kyura-Kids' were determined in no-choice experiment and were compared with those on three other cultivars. There were no differences among cultivars in numbers of puncturing females, oviposition females and fertilized egg oviposition females. Number of feeding punctures, number of eggs laid and number of hatched larvae were not different among four chrysanthemum cultivars, while number of pupae fed on 'Kyura-Kids' were extremely small among them. This indicated that the resistance to L. trifolii of 'Kyura-Kids' reported on the basis of the field experiment was caused by high larval mortality.

    The spider mite, <I>Tetranychus takafujii</I> Ehara and Ohashi,2002, is known to occur mainly on weeds and black nightshade in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures on Honshu island. In 2007, <I>T. takafujii</I> was found to cause heavy damage to cherry tomatoes in Kagoshima on Kyushu island. To test the possibility of chemically controling this spider mite, we tested its susceptibility to 18 acaricides/pesticides available for tomato and other vegetables in the Solanaceae using a leaf dip method. Spider mite females were highly susceptible to most acaricides/pesticides, except Etoxazole SC and Spirodiclofen SC which are categorized as slow-acting. Spider mite eggs were also highly susceptible to many of treatments, except Malathion EC, Bifentrin 2.0% WP, Emamectin benzoate EC, Chlorfenapyr SC and Bifenazate SC. Egg hatchability at day 4 were ranged from 24.7% to 89.4% among the treatments, and most neonate larvae died after 1 day of Emamectin benzoate EC, Chlorfenapyr SC and Bifenazate SC treatments. Results suggest that many of the treatments tested will be effective in controlling of <I>T. takafujii</I> either at the egg, larval or adult stage.

    Nested PCR amplification of a <i>Spodoptera litura</i> nucleopolyhedrovirus (SpltNPV) <i>lef-8</i> gene fragment was performed on egg masses and larvae of <i>S. litura</i>, and resulted in detection of a latent SpltNPV in 20.0% of “healthy” laboratory stock samples, and in 22.6% of samples collected at different periods and in remote places in Kagoshima Prefecture. The PCR product sequences showed 99% similarity to the published <i>lef-8</i> sequence of SpltNPV, confirming that the amplification products were derived from SpltNPV. Further, cross-inoculation of laboratory stock <i>S. litura</i> larvae with <i>Mythimna separata</i> NPV (MyseNPV) activated the latent virus, which provoked a change in the virulence of MyseNPV samples collected from cadavers of <i>S. litura</i>. Our data suggest that caution should be taken when using <i>S. litura</i> as a host to produce heterologous NPVs.

    A survey in the southern part of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, found 63 host plant species from 15 families associated with Liriomyza trifolii and 53 species from 10 families associated with L. sativae. The two Liriomyza species co-occurred in most greenhouses (inside) and also on open vegetable fields near greenhouses (outside). Outside greenhouses, the number of host plant species mined by larvae declined from February to April, although mining larvae were found even in winter. In greenhouses containing Chrysanthemum and qing-geng-cai, L. trifolii was dominant. The two Liriomyza species co-occurred at equal density in greenhouses containing ornamental flowers and cherry tomato, while L. sativae dominated in greenhouses containing squash and leaf vegetables. Outside greenhouses, L. trifolii was dominant around Chrysanthemum greenhouses, and, in spite of cultivated plants, the two species co-occurred at equal densities around ornamental flower greenhouses; L. sativae was dominant around squash and cherry tomato greenhouses. The relative dominance of L. trifolii or L. sativae depended on the cultivation management and the existence of suitable host plants. Exceptionally, on some species of squash cultivated around greenhouses, we found L. trifolii in the 2005 and 2006 surveys, but not in the 2004 survey.

    The relative abundance of three <I>Liriomyza</I> leaf miners, <I>L. bryoniae, L. trifolii</I> and <I>L. sativae</I> infesting 23 cultivars/species of commercially cultivated vegetables and ornamental flowers was examined over three growing seasons, in a field survey on the Satsuma Peninsula of Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu Island. Infested leaves were sampled monthly and the relative abundance of emerging flies was compared among plant cultivars or taxa. For <I>L. bryoniae,</I> we found just a single adult that emerged from a cucumber sampled in 2005. The relative abundance of the leaf miners tended to depend on the families of the host plants. <I>L. trifolii</I> completely predominated on members of Brassicaceae, Compositae, and Umbelliferae, while <I>L. sativae</I> predominated on members of Cucurbitaceae, although a few <I>L. trifolii</I> emerged each year. <I>L. trifolii</I> and <I>L. sativae</I> were both sampled constantly on 3 species of Solanaceae and 3 species of Leguminosae and abundant species varied inconsistently among sites and among years. These results conflicted with a similar survey conducted on Honshu Island in the following 3 points : 1) there were few individuals of <I>L. bryoniae</I> ; 2) <I>L. trifolii</I> predominated completely on Brassicaceae ; and 3) <I>L. trifolii</I> and <I>L. sativae</I> were both sampled on Leguminosae and the abundant species varied inconsistently.

    Lepidopterous pests of bamboo and bamboograss shoots were surveyed in Kyushu, Japan.     The sensitivity of the larvae of two tea tortricids, <i>Adoxophyes dubia</i> and <i>A. honmai</i>, to <i>Adoxophyes orana</i> granulovirus was compared by peroral inoculation of granular inclusion bodies. <i>A. dubia</i> and <i>A. honmai</i> used in this study originated from feral moths collected in southern Kyushu, and were maintained as laboratory stocks. Although the larvae of the two species showed similar sensitivity to <i>A. orana</i> granulovirus during early to middle larval stages, extension of the larval period caused by the granulovirus was more evident in <i>A. dubia</i> than in <i>A. honmai</i>.

    We examined the reproductive potential of three <i>Orius</i> (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) species, <i>O. strigicollis</i> (Poppius), <i>O. sauteri</i> (Poppius) and <i>O. minutus</i> (Linnaeus), at different rearing temperatures (i.e., 17, 20, 23, 26, and 29°C) using the eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth (<i>Ephestia kuehniella</i> Zeller) as a food source. Mean generation times of the three species were nearly the same at all temperatures. The net reproductive rate of <i>O. minutus</i> was higher than those of the other two species at 17, 20, 23, and 26°C, and that of <i>O. strigicollis</i> was the highest among the three species at 29°C. Interspecific differences of net reproductive rates were largest at 29°C. Although the intrinsic rate of natural increase did not differ among the three species from 17 to 26°C, the rate for <i>O. strigicollis</i> was far higher than that for <i>O. sauteri</i> and <i>O. minutus</i> at 29°C. These results suggest that interspecific differences in the reproductive potentials of the three species tend to become larger as the temperature increases. Thus, we infer that <i>O. strigicollis</i> is advantageous in a wider temperature range than <i>O. sauteri</i> and <i>O. minutus</i>.

    The effect of temperature on oviposition and adult longevity of the legume pod borer, <i>Maruca vitrata</i> (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) was examined at four constant temperatures with a 14L10D photoperiod. The mean numbers of eggs laid per female were 838, 856, 777 and 644 at 27, 25, 22 and 20°C, respectively. Female adult longevity and pre-ovipositional period were shortened with increasing temperature. The net reproductive rate was highest at 25°C (342.2), and the intrinsic rates of natural increase were 0.1844, 0.1847, 0.1807 and 0.1661 at 27, 25, 22 and 20°C, respectively.

    New larval foodplants of ten species of Tortricidae and Carposinidae, Eupoecilia citrinana (ex Sanguisorba tenuifolia var. alba), Eudemis profundana (ex Prunus ssiori), Olethreutes siderana (ex Spiraea miyabei), Olethreutes hydrangeana (ex Tilia japonica), Olethreutes mori (ex Sorbus alnifolia), Lobesia (Lobesia) bicinctana (ex Sanguisorba tenuifolia), Enarmonia flammeata (ex Sasa plamata), Rhopobota neavana (ex Fraxinus mandshurica var. japonica) and Carposina niponensis (ex Rosa rugosa), are recorded from Japan.

     チャ園農薬散布量削減のために開発された少量農薬散布機を使用して、フェンプロパトリン乳剤をチャ樹摘採面にだけ散布した殺虫剤少量散布区(40L/10a)で散布前後にクモ相を調査し、200L/10a(通常量)散布区および無処理区と比較した。その結果、散布後の少量農薬散布区のクモ相は無処理区とほぼ同様であり、200L区よりも個体数が多く、特にフクログモ科が多かった。また、それ以外には、ハエトリグモ科、ヒメグモ科、タナグモ科、ササグモ科、カニグモ科などが採集された。これらのクモをシャーレ飼育し、各種チャ園害虫を与えて24時間捕食試験をしたところ、チャノミドリヒメヨコバイ、チャノキイロアザミウマ、およびチャハマキ1齢幼虫はいずれの科のクモも良く捕食した。アブラムシについてはフクログモ、タナグモ科が、カンザワハダニについてはヒメグモ、タナグモ、カニグモ科が良く捕食したが、その他のクモ類はあまり捕食しなかった。殺虫剤量を減らすことでクモ類が茶園に温存されても、温存されるクモによって抑えられる害虫が異なるものと推測された。なお本研究は農林水産省H27年の農食研事業として行われたものである。
