    The design method for broadband metasurfaces with a function of a two-dimensional (2-D) sub-wavelength axicon lens is proposed. The one-dimensional (1-D) transmission-line (TL) model is used for the design and the concept is explained based on the theory. The design formula is derived and TL parameters are calculated by determining the condition of the lens like the refraction angle or the aperture size. A metasurface is composed of the 1-D TL model and circuit simulations are carried out with a SPICE simulator. The complex voltage distributions are calculated and the results show that the designed metasurface generates a Bessel zone and has a function of a 2-D axicon lens.

    The design method for topological waveguides is presented based on the transmission-line (TL) theory of metamaterials. Two types of rhombic composite right/left-handed (CRLH) TLs are proposed and the conditions for designing topological waveguides are stated. Circuit parameters are chosen according to the conditions and those frequency dispersion characteristics are calculated by using the theoretical formulas. The designed two rhombic CRLH TLs are arranged periodically at two areas, respectively, and a topological waveguide is constituted on the zigzag boundary between those. The operation is verified by circuit simulations and the validity of the design method is demonstrated from the results.

    We have observed spatial distribution of sonoluminescence from acoustic cavitation bubbles in electric-field-Applied water by using a commercial digital camera. Luminescence included two colors of bluish white and reddish orange and had a column shape. Luminescent characteristics changed when an electric field was applied to the water.

    A design method for negative refractive index (NRI) metasurface lenses whose thickness is thinner than that of conventional NRI metamaterial ones is presented. A one-dimensional distributed transmission-line model is introduced to the design and the design formulas for determining the line length and the characteristic impedance are shown. As an example, a NRI metasurface lens operating at 1.85 GHz is designed based on the proposed method. A circuit simulation is carried out and complex voltage distributions are calculated to confirm the focusing operation of the designed lens whose thickness is sufficiently thinner than the wavelength.

    We design a broadband flat metasurface lens whose thickness is much thinner than the wavelength. The concept with one-dimensional (1-D) transmission-line model is recalled and 1-D meander microstrip-line structures are used for the design. Determining the specification of the lens, the line length is calculated based on the design formula. The eigenfrequency analysis is carried out to modify the error of electrical length from the theoretical value, and the line length is optimized. A metasurface lens is constituted with the structures and full-wave simulations are performed to confirm the broadband operation. It is seen from the results that the designed lens can make a focus at any frequency.

    We proposed two types of LC-loaded metasurface devices having a simple cuboid and a cuboid with a chevron-waveguide structure as a unit cell and showed simulation results on light beam steering. According to the results, it has been confirmed numerically that the light steers at the metasurface devices and its angle can be controlled by change of refractive index. By employing the cuboid with a chevron-waveguide structure, the same steering angle was achieved at lower refractive index change.

    The design method of broadband metasurfaces for generating a two-dimensional (2-D) Gaussian beam from a normal incident plane wave with the same amplitude distribution is presented based on the one-dimensional transmission-line model. The formula of the characteristic impedance of the model is derived according to the concept and an electromagnetic metasurface is designed by using the model with the parameters determined from the formula. Circuit simulations are carried out to confirm the validity of the design with the model. The results show that the designed metasurface generates a 2-D Gaussian beam from an incident plane wave and also has the broadband characteristics.

    We propose an implementation method for broadband metasurfaces based on a one-dimensional distributed transmission-line model. Five types of one-dimensional meander microstrip-line structures are proposed and a metasurface refracting a normal incident plane wave with a 20-degree angle is implemented with those. Line length of each structure is determined from the theoretical formula of the model and the error from the theoretical value is modified by eigenfrequency analysis. Full-wave simulations are carried out, and the broadband refracting operations and the validity of the proposed method are confirmed.

    A design method for transmission-type broadband invisible cloaks is presented. An invisible cloak for hiding a much larger rhombus area than the wavelength is designed by using straight and meander transmission-lines and those line lengths are calculated from theoretical formulas. Circuit simulations are carried out and the broadband operations of the designed invisible cloak are demonstrated from the calculated results of the complex voltage distributions.

    Four types of one-dimensional (1-D) meander microstrip-line structures are proposed in order to realize 1-D distributed transmission-line models for the design of carpet cloaks that can hide larger objects than the wavelength. The line length of the proposed structures is determined based on the design theory of the model and a carpet cloak for hiding periodically arranged large triangle areas on a flat surface is designed by using the proposed structures. Full-wave simulations are performed, and the broadband operations and the validity of the design are demonstrated from the calculated results.

    The design theory for electromagnetic metamaterials with negative refractive indices by using a distributed transmission-line model is introduced to the design of acoustic metamaterials, and a negative refractive index (NRI) acoustic lens is designed theoretically. Adjustments to the negative refractive indices of metamaterials have been carried out by calculations with numerical simulators in conventional design methods. As the results show, many calculations are needed to determine the shape of the unit structures and there are issues in that it is difficult to design those rigorously, meaning that limitations regarding the degree of freedom in the designs are many. On the other hand, the transmission-line model can rigorously design the unit cell structures of both the negative refractive index metamaterials and the background media with the positive refractive indices by calculations with the design formulas and modifying the error from the theory with a small calculation. In this paper, a meander acoustic waveguide unit cell structure is proposed in order to realize a structure with characteristics equivalent to the model, and the waveguide width and length for realizing an NRI acoustic lens are determined from the design formula of the model. The frequency dispersion characteristics of the proposed structure are also computed by eigenvalue analysis and the error in the waveguide length from the theoretical value is modified by a minor adjustment of the waveguide length. In addition, the NRI acoustic lens is constituted by periodically arranging the proposed unit cell structure with the calculated parameters, and the full-wave simulations are carried out to show the validity of the design theory. The results show that the designed lens operates at 2.5 kHz.

    We propose the design method for broadband acoustic metamaterials based on the concept of transformation acoustics. Two-dimensional distributed transmission-line (TL) models for full-tensor anisotropic electromagnetic metamaterials are applied to full-tensor anisotropic acoustic metamaterials and the design formulas are shown to uniquely determine the structural parameters of the unit cells. Two-dimensional acoustic waveguide unit cell structures for realizing the TL models are proposed and an acoustic carpet cloak and an acoustic illusion medium are designed according to the introduced theory. The complex sound pressure distributions in the acoustic waveguides of the unit cells are calculated by full-wave simulations to verify the validity of the proposed method, and the broadband operations of the designed carpet cloak and illusion medium are confirmed from the results.

    A method for realizing broadband acoustic metasurfaces composed of a one-dimensional distributed transmission-line model is proposed. There are no design formulas for determining the structural parameters of the structure constituting acoustic metasurfaces in the conventional method, and therefore parameter extractions by means of many calculations with numerical simulations are needed to realize acoustic metasurfaces. There are also narrow band operations or impedance matching problems. On the other hand, this paper shows that we can design broadband acoustic metasurfaces by determining the structural parameters with the design formulas of the model without many calculations. An acoustic metasurface that refracts incident plane waves at an angle of 20 degrees is first designed by using one-dimensional meander acoustic waveguide structures equivalent to the model, and these structural parameters are determined by the design formulas of the model and the modifications of the error from the theory. Full-wave simulations are performed, and the broadband operations and the validity of the design theory are shown from these results. Furthermore, a broadband acoustic flat lens is designed with the proposed structures as an example of the application of the proposed method, and these operations are also demonstrated by similar full-wave simulations.

    We show the coupling characteristics of a mode multi/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) with a vertically stacked asymmetric directional coupler. Designed multilayer 4-mode MUX/DEMUX has higher coupling efficiency than the conventional in-plane mode MUX/DEMUX.

    An acoustic illusion medium for mimicking a groove on a flat surface is designed by using the equivalent circuit models for full-tensor anisotropic acoustic metamaterials. The concept is explained according to the theory of transformation acoustics and its circuit parameters are calculated from the design formulas. The mimicking operations of the normal and the oblique incidence cases are shown by circuit simulations with a SPICE simulator to confirm the validity of the design theory. In addition, the radar cross sections (RCSs) are compared with those of the groove to evaluate the operations.

    We examined light propagation along the spot size converter of silicon photonic wire waveguides, and show there are two maxima in coupling efficiency. An optimal design was given in terms of compactness and high efficiency by changing its dimension and shape.

    A design method for negative refractive index (NRI) metamaterials is proposed based on the transmission-line (TL) approach. A distributed TL model is introduced to the design and the design formulas are shown. A NRI lens operating at 3.85 GHz is designed with the model as an example. The operation and the validity of the design method are exhibited from the calculated results by circuit simulations with a SPICE simulator.

    Equivalent circuit models for two-dimensional (2-D) full-tensor anisotropic composite right/left-handed metamaterials are presented to design NRI metamaterials based on transformation electromagnetics for manipulating backword waves according to the transformed coordinate system. Relations of circuit parameters and material parameters are shown by comparing circuit equations with Maxwell's equations. As an example, a 2-D full-tensor negative refractive index (NRI) lens based on transformation electromagnetics are designed by using the equivalent circuit models. The full-tensor NRI lens can shift positions of the focus and the refocus according to the coordinate system transformed from the original one embedding a general 2-D NRI lens. Its operations are shown by circuit simulations with a SPICE simulator.

    A design method for two-dimensional (2-D) zero-index materials (ZIMs) is presented based on the transmission-line (TL) approach in order to realize invisible cloaks for hiding objects. A simple 2-D distributed TL model is proposed and the formula to calculate the dispersion characteristics is theoretically derived. It is shown from the calculated dispersion characteristics that a Dirac cone is always formed at the T-point without adjustments of the unit cell for the degeneration of propagation modes and ZIMs can be easily designed with the proposed model. In addition, a ZIM operating at 5 GHz is designed with the proposed model, and its cloaking operations and the validity of the design theory are demonstrated by circuit simulations.

    We extend the theory of equivalent circuit models for two-dimensional (2-D) full-tensor anisotropic electromagnetic metamaterials and introduce the design method with equivalent circuit models to designs of 2-D full-tensor anisotropic acoustic metamaterials. Relations of circuit parameters and material parameters including the off-diagonal components of the mass density tensor are revealed from the duality of circuit equations and acoustic equations. A 2D acoustic carpet cloak for hiding a bump on a flat surface is designed with equivalent circuit models to confirm the validity of the theory. Circuit simulations are carried out and the voltage distributions and the radar cross sections are compared with those for the cases with the flat surface and the bump. Those results show the angle independent cloaking operations of the designed acoustic carpet cloak.

We demonstrate broadband transmission-line illusions based on transformation electromagnetics at microwave frequencies by using the distributed full-tensor anisotropic medium. Due to an intrinsic nature of the non-resonant unit cell of the medium, the illusions operate from DC to an upper limit frequency where the homogeneous medium approximation holds. Two-dimensional groove and bump illusion media mimicking scattered waves by an original groove and a bump are designed. Their broadband and incident angle independent operations are confirmed by circuit simulations. The groove illusion medium is implemented on a dielectric substrate with microstrip-line technology, and it is confirmed experimentally by near-field measurements that the illusion medium well mimics scattered waves by the original groove in the broadband frequency range from 2.60 GHz to 4.65 GHz.

    Planar distributed full-tensor anisotropic metamaterials for cloaks of invisibility based on transformation electromagnetics are proposed. The proposed metamaterials are composed of nonresonant transmission lines and are advantageous in full control of the off-diagonal components of the permeability tensor as well as broadband and low-loss characteristics. The explicit design formulas for the metamaterials are given based on the equivalent circuit derived directly from Maxwell's equations. A carpet cloak of invisibility is designed and the validity of the design theory is confirmed by circuit simulations. In addition, the carpet cloak is implemented in microstrip line technology and its performance is demonstrated experimentally at microwave frequencies.
