Traffic noise is one of the selection pressures of urban habitats. Because noise interferes with acoustic communication, many studies have shown that the temporal structures of acoustic signals change depending on the noise. However, it is often unknown whether the changes are adaptive, such as changes being more easily located by females under noisy conditions. To investigate the phenomena, bend-legged ground crickets (Dianemobius nigrofasciatus) were collected from three urban and three rural habitats and reared in a common garden conditions. Male calling songs and female mate location behaviour of the progeny were measured. Urban males emitted a calling song with a higher dominant frequency and shorter chirp than did rural males. The playback experiment of female response and localization to songs of urban and rural males, controlling for noise, showed that there were no significant effects of the song on the mate location behaviour between urban and rural songs under noisy conditions. Although the song of urban males elicited a faster response of females, the effect was limited. These results indicate the change in song is not adaptive in terms of female choice. Urban females located more quickly to song under noisy conditions. The results suggest adaptive changes in female mating behaviour occur in urban habitats.

Predation is an important selection pressure affecting animals. Predation has both consumptive and non-lethal effects. Because it is often difficult to estimate the extent to which non-lethal effects occur, we focused on autotomy as an indicator of non-lethal effects occurring in urban habitats. Autotomy is expected to indicate that individuals have escaped from predators. The incidence of leg autotomy in the cricket Dianemobius nigrofasciatus was compared between urban and rural habitats. The incidence of autotomy was higher in urban than in rural habitats. Failure to moult and conspecific aggressive interactions were not the main factors contributing to the incidence of autotomy in these crickets. The ease of autotomy and risk-taking tendencies did not differ among habitats. These results indicate that the incidence of autotomy reflects predation failure, and the non-lethal effects of predation are more likely to occur in urban habitats.

Habitat choice is an important behavior for maximizing fitness. One of the factors involved in habitat choice is preference for habitat substrates. In the context of predatory avoidance, it is adaptive to prefer substrates that are matched to own body color. The ground cricket Dianemobius csikii (Bolivar, 1901) occurs on sandy beaches. The body color of D. csikii resembles the sand of their habitat, which could be a form of crypsis. If D. csikii is not able to choose a suitable habitat background that matches their body color, the crickets incur a high risk of predation. The risk could result in population decline of the cricket. To examine whether D. csikii shows preference for substrates that match its body color, we undertook a two-choice test of sand or soil substrates after controlling the type of flooring substrates used during rearing. The crickets did not show preference for sand. There was no significant effect of flooring substrates during the nymph stage on the preference. These results suggest that when habitats are fragmented, crickets do not actively choose a cryptic background. There were significant differences in the substrate preference between sexes. These results reflect differences in the reproductive strategies of males and females.

The effects of mating experience on male mating behavior are mediated by four factors: mating cost, such as resource depletion, perception of mating opportunities, self-perception of attractiveness, and female quality. For example, encountering females might increase male expectations of prospective mating opportunities, while copulation increases self-perception of attractiveness in males. To determine the relative importance of these factors, the effect of mating on the two components of reproductive effort (courtship and fighting effort) in Gryllus bimaculatus was examined. Calling activity before and after encountering females was measured, and copulation success was recorded. Subsequently, the intensity and outcome of male-male fighting behavior was recorded. Female encounter increased calling activity irrespective of copulation, thereby indicating that the perception of mating opportunities is important factor for the males. Changes in courtship effort of males were larger and fighting success was lower when they were previously paired with relatively heavier females. These results indicate that male reproductive effort is also affected by quality of previous mating partners.

Omnivory is a feeding habit in which animals prey on organisms from two or more trophic levels. Omnivorous species play important roles in predator-prey interactions, food web dynamics, and ecosystem functions. Although cricket species have been considered omnivores, quantified investigations of their feeding habits have not been carried out. Therefore, we compared the developmental time, body size and mortality rate of the band-legged ground cricket, Dianemobius nigrofasciatus (Matsumura) (Orthoptera: Trigonidiidae) reared on diets meant for carnivores and herbivores. Furthermore, to examine whether the crickets can balance their nutritional conditions through their food choices, we set up two additional diet treatments, which comprised diets for carnivores and herbivores provided simultaneously or by rotation. The mortality rate of the carnivore diet treatment was higher than that of the other diet treatments. This result suggests that D. nigrofasciatus is a "herbivore" that also obtains nutrients from resources other than plant materials. Although developmental time did not significantly differ among the dietary treatments, the body size of the crickets that were provided both diets simultaneously was significantly larger than that of the crickets provided with only the diets for either carnivores or herbivores. These results suggest that an appropriate amount of carnivorous feeding is advantageous for the development of the cricket, and indicates that crickets can balance nutrition on their own.

When suitability of sites for parent is incompatible with that for their eggs, parent-offspring conflict occurs - the parent must choose between the optimal oviposition site for eggs and that suitable for itself. We examined effects of predator cue on parental habitat use and oviposition site in Physa acuta. We assessed desiccation risk in eggs and the relationship between water depth and predation risk. Predator cues induced the elevation of parental habitat away from the bottom but had no effect on the oviposition site. Oviposition site choice is not by-product of escape response. Eggs that were exposed to desiccation failed to hatch, indicating high desiccation risk. Eggs laid at deeper levels were at higher risk of stripping from oviposition substrates by crayfishes. Although the middle-water level would be suitable oviposition sites, the parents selected an oviposition site in the upper level. There are other benefits and costs of oviposition site selection.
