<p>Understanding the regrowth condition and pattern for the vine plant <i>Epipremnum aureum</i> is important for effective removal of this invasive species. The purpose of this study was to clarify the influence of the light environment, size of the plant body, and existence of roots on the survival and regrowth of a piece of the plant body of <i>E. aureum</i>. We surveyed the survival and regrowth of <i>E. aureum</i> for plant cuttings of different sizes under three light conditions representing the outside, edge, and inside of forests (Experiment 1), and for plant cuttings of different sizes with or without roots inside forests (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, we observed a high mortality outside forests, but confirmed higher survival rate and probability of regrowth at forest edges and inside forests. Even one leaf with a stem and root could regrow under low light intensity, whereas the amount of regrown plant organs or tissue was higher for a larger cutting. In Experiment 2, the number of roots increased more rapidly for plant cuttings without initial roots than for those with initial roots, although the amount of regrown plant tissue increased with increasing cutting size. Even small pieces of the plant body of <i>E. aureum</i> with no roots frequently survived and regrew under low light intensity. This indicates that small pieces of the plant body should not be left at forest edges or inside forests during removal work.</p>

<p>In this study, we aimed to elucidate the size of Chinese fir (<i>Cunninghamia lanceolate</i>) seedlings, of which mainstem is fed by the Japanese hare (<i>Lepus brachyurus</i>). We planted 60 seedlings of various heights (82-197 cm) in a stand in Tarumizu City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and observed the feeding of the mainstem for 1 year. We found that of the 15 dead seedlings, only 1 died after the feeding of the mainstem. Among the surviving seedlings, the mainstem of 25 seedlings was fed by hares. The probability of feeding on the mainstem decreased with the increasing size of the seedlings. Regarding the generalized linear model estimation, the probability of feeding on the mainstem was <10% for seedlings with an initial height of >140 cm or an initial diameter of >15 mm at the height of 60 cm. Therefore, we predict that Chinese fir seedlings are less likely to suffer feeding damage of the mainstem after they grow to be larger than the abovementioned values.</p>

Amami-Oshima and Tokunoshima Islands (the Amami Islands) are part of an important area for biogeography in Japan. Although the uniqueness of the islands' flora is well recognized, their plant diversity, including non-tree life forms, has yet to be compared with that of other regions. Here, we characterize the plant community structure of the Amami Islands, and analyze the α and β diversity patterns with respect to environmental factors as well as the frequency of threatened and endemic species compared with that in regions at higher and lower latitudes. We used 5 × 100 m plots at seven sites on the Amami Islands, three sites further north, and one site further south to record the abundance of all vascular plant species and tree sizes. We also used tree census data from five plots from the Monitoring Sites 1000 Project. Three principal components from five environmental variables were used as factors affecting diversity. We found that the broad-leaved evergreen forests on the Amami Islands have higher α diversity resulting from species richness anomalies in shared families among regions. Additionally, generalized linear mixed models indicated that temperature and altitude affect α diversity positively. Furthermore, multiple regression models on distance matrices showed that temperature and regional differences in weather conditions affect β diversity. Tree species were found to affect species diversity and rareness, but herbaceous plants also affect these parameters substantially. These results indicate that the two studied islands are biodiversity hotspots and that evaluating herbaceous species is important for determining forest biodiversity.

The Upper Parana Atlantic Forest (UPAF) harbours some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. However, little data are available on UPAF ecosystems, constraining effective protection and restoration efforts. The objective of this study was to classify UPAF forests, focusing on the stand structure, tree species diversity, tree species composition, and soil properties and their relationships with stand characteristics. We established 71 plots (50 m × 20 m) distributed across eight protected areas in the Paraguayan UPAF and evaluated trees with diameter at breast height ≥ 10 cm and composite soil samples from 0–20 cm in depth. We identified four forest types with their corresponding indicator species. Among these forest types, we observed significant differences between stand structure and tree species diversity. We separated the soil properties into two axes, with essential elements and pH on one axis, and the balance of clay and sand contents on the other. We found significant relationships between essential elements and pH and individual density, and between the balance of clay and sand contents and tree species diversity. Our findings explain the heterogeneity of the tree community and contribute to our understanding of the UPAF, enabling science-based and better-focused forest conservation and restoration programmes.

Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) is currently distributed across a wide geographical area in East Asia. As a common bamboo species occurring along a broad environmental gradient, there is a need to understand how environmental and biotic drivers affect belowground processes at large scales. In this study, we investigated the influence of climate, soil properties, stand characteristics, and organic matter input parameters as potential drivers of the initial decomposition process in Moso bamboo stands at a regional scale. Using the Tea Bag Index method, we estimated the initial decomposition rate (k) and stabilization factor (S; potential long-term carbon storage) from standard litter incubated at 13 sites across southern Japan and Taiwan. We found that both decomposition parameters were strongly affected by the climate. The climatic conditions during the incubation period better explained the variance in k. In contrast, the long-term climate was more important for S. Notably, temperature and precipitation interactively affected the initial decomposition rates. This interaction showed that in warmer sites, precipitation increased k, whereas in cooler sites, precipitation had no effect or even decreased k. Soil parameters had no influence on k and only had minor effects on S. A structural equation model showed that the stabilization factor was indirectly affected by stand density, which suggests that higher bamboo densities could increase litter stabilization by increasing above-and below-ground organic matter input. Our study highlights the central role of climate in controlling decomposition processes in Moso bamboo stands on a broad scale. Moreover, differences in stand structure can indirectly affect potential soil carbon storage through changes in organic matter input and soil conditions.

Aims: The relationship between functional traits and growth conditions across tree species provides critical information for understanding resource acquisition strategy of each species. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between root tip morphology and growth conditions with considering the phylogenetic difference in a primary lowland dipterocarp forest. Methods: We surveyed growth conditions for 13 target species of Macaranga and Shorea, i.e., light condition, soil physical properties, and soil nitrogen (N) dynamics, and root tip morphology, including specific root tip length (SRLt), root tip diameter (RDt), and root tip tissue density (RTDt) and analyzed their relationships considering the difference between genera. Results: The differences in SRLt and RDt between two genera, Macaranga and Shorea, were validated by the difference in environmental factors, i.e., light intensity and soil ammonification rate. With considering the difference between genera, we detected an interspecific variation in SRLt, RDt, and RTDt across all 13 species in response to differences in environmental factors such as light intensity, soil physical properties, soil nitrification, and N mineralization rates. Among the same species, the SRLt decreased with increasing light intensity and increased with increasing nitrification rates, while the RDt exhibited an opposite trend. Conclusion: We confirmed that the root tip morphology varies according to growth conditions in tropical tree species: shade-tolerant tree species and/or tree species grown in fertile condition had root tips with high efficiency of soil exploration or exploitation per a unit of root biomass. This variation pattern was different than that of temperate tree species.

<p>We conducted the vegetation survey by using the tree census plots of old-growth forests on the islands of Amami-Oshima and Tokunoshima, both of which are world natural heritage candidates, Amami Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Here we report the outline of two 1-hectare plots established at 400 m and 600 m in the western part of Amami-Oshima, comparing them with an older plot at 350 m in the central part of the island. The minimum census size of trees was 4.8 cm diameter at breast height. Our plots showed the lesser dominance of <i>Castanopsis sieboldii</i> and <i>Schima wallichii</i> and higher dominance of <i>Distylium racemosum</i> and <i>Quercus salicina</i>, which suggests that our plots are at more advanced stages of vegetation succession. The variation among the three 1-hectare plots will be explained by altitude, topography and disturbance history. We also studied animals around our tree census plots on Amami-Oshima and Tokunoshima by using a camera trap method. The results indicated that the old-growth forests on both islands serve as habitats for mammals and birds including many endemics.</p>
