    <p>According to Tone et al. (2025), under the recent poor catch of Japanese common squid, the sales value of “delicacies and confectionery (dry)” (higher processed products) and ‘sashimi’ and “boiled squid” (lower processed products), which occupied the top positions in the sales value of processed squid products in the retail industry from 2013 to 2019, was maintained. On the other hand, the sales value of lower processed products decreased in line with the decrease in the catch of Japanese common squid. What management responses are being taken by higher and lower processors?</p><p>The purpose of this study is to identify the individual company management responses that higher and lower processors are now taking under poor catch of squid. In this study, we interviewed 10 higher and lower processors about the management responses they have taken from around 2015 to the present, before the recent squid poor catch.</p><p>The results revealed three points. First, both higher and lower processors were shifting to imported squid and increasing production of processed products other than squid. Second, squid processors differed in their investments depending on their size. Third, both higher and lower processors were increasing production of processed products other than squid through existing sales channels in the food industry.</p>

    <p>In recent years, Japanese common squid that the main type of squid produced in Japan has been suffering from poor catches. The poor catch of Japanese common squid is an issue that affects the entire value chain from production to consumption.</p><p>The market for processed squid products is diverse. This study focuses on the sales trend of processed squid products in retail and aims to clarify the aspects of the changes in the contemporary situation.</p><p>The research methodology focused on the analysis of point of sales (POS) data. The POS data used in this study were collected from the top seven supermarkets in Japan in terms of sales, from which an expanded estimation was made to estimate the sales value of the Japanese retail industry. The period of analysis was from 2013 to 2019, when data were obtained. The years 2020 to 2022, when the Covid-19 spread, were excluded from the scope of the study because of temporary changes in consumption behavior due to refraining from going out.</p><p>The results of the study showed that the impact of the decrease in squid production was small for higher processed products (delicacies and confectionery (dry)), but very large for lower processed products (squid rounds and slices, sashimi, boiled squid), resulting in a large decrease in the sales value of these products.</p>

    <p>In recent years, the number of buyers involved in the formation of fair price for marine products through auctions etc. at local wholesale markets has been decreasing. Under this circumstance, how is the price formation function of local wholesale market being maintained? This study conducts a survey of wholesale markets in production areas where the number of buyers is decreasing and aims to clarify the actual situation of primary price formation for marine products, especially the measures taken by FCA to maintain their function, as well as their effectiveness and limitations. The results of the survey on the Eguchi FCA in Kagoshima Prefecture showed that the price formation method has changed from auctions to negotiated transaction. It was also confirmed that the share of purchases by a buyer has increased, and it makes difficult to maintain a fair price formation. Under these situations, FCA’s direct sales facility makes inroads as buyer and maintains a competitive environment in price formation. In addition, the facility retails, and wholesales local marine products to customers. However, the total volume of marine products that can be handled in the local wholesale markets has shrunk, the FCA has been forced to respond by production adjustment.</p><p>This study has revealed that it has become extremely difficult to maintain the fair price formation function in local wholesale market where the number of buyers has been decreasing. In addition, the importance of replacing the various buyer’s distribution functions by FCA to maintain the price formation function was also clarified.</p>

    <p>In this report, I took up the major types of aquaculture in Japan and clarified their current situation from the fisheries census statistics. In addition, focusing on fish aquaculture, I analyzed the 2018 census and clarified its structural changes.</p><p>On the whole, the number of fish farming enterprises is decreasing significantly, especially in the fish farming industries such as yellowtail farming. In fish farming, expansion of scale has a great significance in improving productivity per worker, and expansion of scale is becoming a necessity to ensure competitiveness. On the other hand, in non-feeding aquaculture, there is no significant difference in productivity depending on the scale, and there is no clear merit in scaling up.</p><p>A small number of large corporate entities have come to hold a large market share, and their actions now have a significant impact on the overall trend of the aquaculture industry. </p><p>With the revision of the Fisheries Act, the aquaculture industry is likely to see more of this type of external capital and technology. The existing aquaculture industry is also developing like a food industry by integrating with land-based industries. Census statistics should evolve in order to capture these new situations.</p>
