The relative abundance of three Liriomyza leaf miners, L. bryoniae, L. trifolii and L. sativae infesting 23 cultivars/species of commercially cultivated vegetables and ornamental flowers was examined over three growing seasons, in a field survey on the Satsuma Peninsula of Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu Island. Infested leaves were sampled monthly and the relative abundance of emerging flies was compared among plant cultivars or taxa. For L. bryoniae, we found just a single adult that emerged from a cucumber sampled in 2005. The relative abundance of the leaf miners tended to depend on the families of the host plants. L. trifolii completely predominated on members of Brassicaceae, Compositae, and Umbelliferae, while L. sativae predominated on members of Cucurbitaceae, although a few L. trifolii emerged each year. L. trifolii and L. sativae were both sampled constantly on 3 species of Solanaceae and 3 species of Leguminosae and abundant species varied inconsistently among sites and among years. These results conflicted with a similar survey conducted on Honshu Island in the following 3 points : 1) there were few individuals of L. bryoniae ; 2) L. trifolii predominated completely on Brassicaceae ; and 3) L. trifolii and L. sativae were both sampled on Leguminosae and the abundant species varied inconsistently.

Lepidopterous pests of bamboo and bamboograss shoots were surveyed in Kyushu, Japan. As a result, Kumasia kumaso (Sugi) was recorded as a pest of bamboo and bamboograss shoots in Japan for the first time. And the host plants of Atrachea miyakensis ssp. were revealed. Two new hosts of Bambusiphila vulgaris (Butler) were also recorded.

The sensitivity of the larvae of two tea tortricids, Adoxophyes dubia and A. honmai, to Adoxophyes orana granulovirus was compared by peroral inoculation of granular inclusion bodies. A. dubia and A. honmai used in this study originated from feral moths collected in southern Kyushu, and were maintained as laboratory stocks. Although the larvae of the two species showed similar sensitivity to A. orana granulovirus during early to middle larval stages, extension of the larval period caused by the granulovirus was more evident in A. dubia than in A. honmai.

We examined the reproductive potential of three Orius (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) species, O. strigicollis (Poppius), O. sauteri (Poppius) and O. minutus (Linnaeus), at different rearing temperatures (i.e., 17, 20, 23, 26, and 29°C) using the eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella Zeller) as a food source. Mean generation times of the three species were nearly the same at all temperatures. The net reproductive rate of O. minutus was higher than those of the other two species at 17, 20, 23, and 26°C, and that of O. strigicollis was the highest among the three species at 29°C. Interspecific differences of net reproductive rates were largest at 29°C. Although the intrinsic rate of natural increase did not differ among the three species from 17 to 26°C, the rate for O. strigicollis was far higher than that for O. sauteri and O. minutus at 29°C. These results suggest that interspecific differences in the reproductive potentials of the three species tend to become larger as the temperature increases. Thus, we infer that O. strigicollis is advantageous in a wider temperature range than O. sauteri and O. minutus.

The effect of temperature on oviposition and adult longevity of the legume pod borer, Maruca vitrata (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) was examined at four constant temperatures with a 14L10D photoperiod. The mean numbers of eggs laid per female were 838, 856, 777 and 644 at 27, 25, 22 and 20°C, respectively. Female adult longevity and pre-ovipositional period were shortened with increasing temperature. The net reproductive rate was highest at 25°C (342.2), and the intrinsic rates of natural increase were 0.1844, 0.1847, 0.1807 and 0.1661 at 27, 25, 22 and 20°C, respectively.
