2021年度は本研究課題の初年度であり、メンバー間による問題意識の共有と最終成果の発表に向けた課題設定など、今後の基盤形成を目的として活動を進めた。
その実績として具体的には、メディア・バイオアートの新たな表現形態を探るという目的のもと、全員参加によるオンライン開催の研究会を9回に分けて実施した。以下の日程と担当者により各自の研究報告と意見交換を進めることで、共通の関心と議論を深めることができた（2021/6/11 担当：水野、7/9：横川・城・増田、8/5：城、9/16：秋吉、10/28:高尾、12/9:松谷、2022/2/24:秋吉、くわえて2021/11/29、2022/1/13には全体での方針確認や情報共有などを実施）。
これら全体会合とは別に、一部のメンバーで文献調査と読解をベースとした研究会を同じくオンラインで継続的に開催し、これは合計で30回に及んだ。この研究会では、昨今のバイオ・メディアアートの動向ととりわけ最近のマルチスピーシーズ人類学との歴史・理論的な接点を探ることを目指した。主要文献を読み進めていくうち、年度途中からは人類学者の奥野克巳氏やキュレーターの四方幸子氏など、それぞれの分野で活躍する研究者に参加やレビューを頂くことができた。その成果は個別の業績のみならず、増田が実行委員長を務めた第41回日本記号学会のシンポジウム（2021/11/27-28、九州大学大橋キャンパス・オンライン）や、アーティストの深澤孝史氏を招いた公開研究会「《道祖神リプレゼンテーション》をめぐって」（2022/03/22、第61回マルチスピーシーズ人類学研究会との共催、オンライン）に反映することができた。
