Lead contamination is currently a serious environmental pollution problem for wild birds. Ingestion of lead from the use of lead shotgun bullets and lead fishing tackles has been reported to cause lead pollution in various bird species worldwide, including Japan. Lead poisoning is known to cause neurological, anemia, and gastrointestinal symptoms as acute toxicity, as well as kidney damage, immunodeficiency, and reproductive disorders as chronic and sub-chronic effects. In particular, the immunodeficiency caused by lead should be considered in relation to the spread of avian influenza, of which birds are natural hosts, and should be addressed on a global scale to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. In addition, it is necessary to accurately understand the toxic effects of lead contamination, especially in species such as wild birds, where reproductive disorders and immunodeficiency can significantly reduce population size and thus have strong impact the ecosystem. While it is important to target rare and potentially important species of raptors in actual monitoring of lead contamination in wild birds, national monitoring is insufficient due to the limited sample size and regional restrictions. Therefore, monitoring of lead contamination in waterfowl such as ducks, which are relatively common throughout Japan and for which samples are easily obtained, will be useful in understanding the contamination status of wild birds. Based on this situation, we are currently analyzing organ lead concentrations in wild birds, especially waterfowl, as a foothold for accurate understanding of the toxic effects of lead contamination. In this presentation, we would like to share the current status of lead contamination in wild birds, the start-up of this project that began last fiscal year, the current status, and future prospects.
