    <p> A modified I-D method was proposed for the purpose of improving an accuracy of slope failure risk prediction. This method was added the results of on-site measurement by a tensiometer to the concept of rainfall index. Since the formation of a saturated zone in a slope could lead to slope instability, it is important to estimate the time (𝑡<sub>sat</sub>) of formation of saturated zones. In this study, a new estimation index for 𝑡<sub>sat</sub> using rainfall index was proposed. As a result, the relationship between the average rainfall intensity and the duration between the beginning of rainfall and the formation of the saturation zone was shown the best result. Furthermore, by incorporating this result into a modified I-D method, the number of correct estimations increased significantly compared to the existing rainfall index. Therefore, by the proposed rainfall index of 𝑡<sub>sat</sub>, it was confirmed that the slope collapse can be predicted only by the rainfall data, and the accuracy was improved.</p>

    <p>Soil moisture condition inside the slope affects the occurrences of slope failures. The previous study revealed that the estimated regression model using a recurrent neural network was available to reproduce the field measurement data of volumetric water content at the time of heavy rain. However, the method of giving input data and the machine learning algorithms should be more discussed. This study discussed the method for estimating the regression model to reproduce the soil moisture condition by changing input data and machine learning algorithms. As a result, the estimated regression model by using antecedent precipi-tation indices as input data and RNN as the machine learning algorithm led to predict the variation of the volumetric water content with sufficient accuracy even on slopes with different soil types.</p>

    After a volcanic eruption, urgent field surveys should be conducted because the
    susceptibility of debris flows increases. However, under the condition of volcanic activity,
    it is difficult to survey eroded areas near the craters. Thus, some indirect surveys using
    topographical information are necessary to sophisticate the disaster prevention system in
    volcanic regions. This study estimated a deep learning model to predict eroded areas by
    inputting the angle and Laplacian of a 100m times 100m area, discussed the quantitative
    accuracy of the estimated model. The analytical results revealed that the deep learning results
    smoothed by median filter could reproduce the training data with high accuracy and precision.

    <p> Rainfall-induced shallow landslides have become more frequent owing to recent occurrences of extreme weather in Japan. The authors obtained research finding from previous studies that slope deformation due to rainfall-induced shallow landslide starts to increase after reaching the initial quasi-saturated volumetric water content (IQS). On the other hand, it was pointed out as problems to confirm the behavior of volumetric water content in the depth direction with respect to slope deformation and verify the consistency between the model test result and the filed measurement result. In this research, we summarized the results of a model experiment and a field measurement to solve these problems. By grasping the temporal change of volumetric water content in the depth direction, it is possible to understand the process from detection of IQS to formation of saturated zone, rise of water level and occurrence of displacement. When the measurement result on the actual slope were considered based on the result of the model slope experiment, it was confirmed that the result on the actual slope agree well with the result of the model slope experiment. In addition, when the IQS index was created as an index for judging whether the slope reached the IQS during rainfall and applied to the measured data on the actual slope, it was shown that the time when the volumetric water content reached IQS could be detected in real time.</p>

    <p>It is important to predict the amount of precipitation that makes roads closed due to landslide disasters to reduce human damage and secure evacuation routes during heavy rain. This study attempted to estimate a prediction model for road closed that trained the data of heavy rain in July 2020 by using the passable route map as labels in machine learning. However, the estimated model could not predict the labels of road closed and it was found that the estimated model was not available for the prediction model. The reason for the result may be there were mistakes in the labeling process and that only the topographical information and rainfall information were not sufficient as input data.</p>

    <p> The pore water pressures of unsaturated and saturated soils have been measured by the monitoring system at a slope behind an important cultural asset in the Kiyomizu temple. Firstly, amount of rainfall to saturate the soil around a potential slip plane in the slope was discussed. A rainfall index considering measurement results with a tensiometer was proposed, and a prediction method on rainfall-induced slope failures using the proposed rainfall index was also proposed. The validity of the proposed prediction method was discussed based on some case histories of rainfall-induced slope failure. Moreover, the accuracy of the proposed prediction method was estimated comparing with the five conventional prediction methods, the proposed prediction method provided greater precision than the others.</p>
