Understanding how animals evolve to become parasites is key to unravelling how biodiversity is generated as a whole, as parasites could account for half of all species richness. Two significant impediments to this are that parasites fossilize poorly and that they retain few clear shared morphological features with non-parasitic relatives. Barnacles include some of the most astonishingly adapted parasites with the adult body reduced to just a network of tubes plus an external reproductive body, but how they originated from the sessile, filter-feeding form is still a mystery. Here, we present compelling molecular evidence that the exceedingly rare scale-worm parasite barnacle Rhizolepas is positioned within a clade comprising species currently assigned to Octolasmis , a genus exclusively commensal with at least six different phyla of animals. Our results imply that species in this genus-level clade represent an array of species at various transitional stages from free-living to parasitic in terms of plate reduction and host-parasite intimacy. Diverging only about 19.15 million years ago, the route to parasitism in Rhizolepas was associated with rapid modifications in anatomy, a pattern that was likely true for many other parasitic lineages.

    Abstract

Merlionia zeeae , a new species belonging to a new genus, is described as a member of the cyclopoid family Anthessiidae (Copepoda), based on both sexes collected off the coast of Singapore. The new species was found in the gill cavities of the longnosed stargazer, Ichthyscopus lebeck (Actinopteri: Perciformes: Uranoscopidae), although almost all members of the family are associated with molluscan hosts. However, this copepod is not similar to other genera of the family Anthessiidae due to possessing the following characters: the curved hook-like antenna, which is similar to that of the family Chondracanthidae in both sexes; the distal portion of the maxilla covered with numerous spinules; and the lack of the maxilliped in the female. Both maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences using partial SSU (18S) ribosomal RNA genes strongly supported a monophyletic clade formed by the new genus, and three anthessiid genera in this study. However, it was not supported that Anthessiidae and Chondracanthidae are closely related. Therefore, the new genus is considered to be a highly transformed member of the former, and the chondracanthid-form antenna might therefore be a product of convergent evolution attributable to the host-switching event from molluscs to fishes.

    Abstract

Temnocephalids are ectosymbionts of various freshwater animals. A species tentatively identified as Temnosewellia aff. vietnamensis (Platyhelminthes: Rhabdocoela: Temnocephalidae) is reported based on materials collected from the body surface of the freshwater crabs Eriocheir japonica (Brachyura: Varunidae) and Geothelphusa exigua (Potamidae) in Kagoshima, southern Japan. The temnocephalid is characterized as follows: the cirrus composed of a cone-shaped shaft and a cylindrical introvert 42–77 μm long; the introvert covered with approximately 30 vertical rows of fine sharp spines; the four seminal receptacles; and a long, curved oviduct with vaginal gland; a pair of gland cells (Haswell's cells) present anterior to the excretory ampullae. Bayesian inference trees using partial nuclear 28S rDNA (28S) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) genes supported that the specimens collected from both crab species are conspecific but these also showed the geographical variations among them on both 28S and COI. The previous records of the genus Temnosewellia in East to South Asian countries are assembled and shown on the map (fig.7, this paper).

<title>Abstract</title>Two species of dirivultid copepod (Siphonostomatoida), Stygiopontius senckenbergi Ivanenko &amp; Ferrari, 2013 and Dirivultus kaiko sp. nov., were discovered from hydrothermal vent fields in the Okinawa Trough, the western North Pacific. Since S. senckenbergi was originally described based on two adult males from the New Ireland Fore-Arc system, Papua New Guinea, the discovery here represents the second record. This species was attached on ventral setae covered with filamentous bacteria of the deep-sea squat lobster Shinkaia crosnieri (Decapoda: Munidopsidae). The female of S. senckenbergi is described for the first time as well as the nauplius I and the copepodid IV. Sexual dimorphism is shown on several appendages (i.e. antennule, leg 2 and leg 5). The nauplius I shows typical lethithotrophic characteristics. Dirivultus kaiko sp. nov., which was found on the tentacular crown of the siboglinid tubeworm Lamellibrachia columna, differs from its two congeners by the antennule, maxilliped and leg 5 of both sexes. These are the second and third dirivultid species to be reported from Japan.

Markevich (1940) established Pseudolepeophtheirus Markevich, 1940 for Pseudolepeophtheirus longicauda Markevich, 1940 based on copepods collected from the pleuronectid fish Platichthys stellatus (Pallas, 1787). Dojiri &amp; Ho (2013) synonymized the genus and the species with Lepeophtheirus Nordmann, 1832 and Lepeophtheirus parvicruris Fraser, 1920, respectively. Later, Homma et al. (2020) resurrected Markevich’s species as a member of Lepeophtheirus, i.e., as L. longicauda (Markevich, 1940). The last component of the names of both genera is ‘phtheirus’ (transliterated from the Greek φθειρ; Nordmann 1832: 30), a masculine noun, and thus under Article 30.1.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (hereinafter, Code; International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999), both generic names are also masculine. The species-group name longicauda might be regarded as either a noun in apposition or as an adjective in the feminine gender, and Markevich (1940) did not specify his intention in this regard. Bearing in mind that ‘cauda’, meaning ‘tail’, actually is a feminine Latin noun and that Markevich did not change the final ‘-a’ to ‘-us’ to match the masculine gender of the genus, we deem that longicauda Markevich, 1940 is a noun in apposition, a position supported by Article 31.2.2 of the Code.

Preliminary results of the deep-sea faunal survey conducted from the TR/V Seisui-maru of Mie University in April 2018 are presented. 18 taxonomists and ecologists working on a wide variety of animal taxa participated in this survey. Surveyed areas included the Kumano Sea (off Mie Prefecture) and south of the Kii Strait (off Tanabe Bay, Wakayama Prefecture), at depths of 80-821 m. Sampling gears employed were beam trawl and biological dredge. The collection is represented by macrobenthos and meiobenthos from 11 animal phyla, including arthropods, echinoderms, annelids and molluscans. The number of phyla occurring in each station varied from 3 to 7. The station with most diverse fauna at the phylum level was St. 3B (south of the Kii Strait, 421-543 m depth, sandy mud bottom). Meiofauna includes priapulids and small arthropods, such as ostracods, tanaidaceans, isopods, cumaceans and acarus. In addition to free-living species, parasitic crustaceans, platyhelminthes, acanthocephalans, annelids and cnidarians were also collected from fishes, ascidians, urchins, holothurians, crustaceans and polychaetes. Preliminary identifications are given for Ostracoda, Cirripedia, Amphipoda, Decapoda, Asteroidea,Ophiuroidea, Holothuroidea, polychaetes, Echiura, Mollusca and Xenoturbellida.

A new species of dirivultid copepod (Siphonostomatoida) is described from hydrothermal vents in a volcanic seamount in Izu-Bonin Arc, western part of North Pacific Ocean. The copepod was collected during the research cruise NT13-09 using the R/V Natsushima with the ROV Hyper-Dolphin in April 2013. The type series of the new species was collected from the populations of Paralvinella spp. (Annelida: Alvinellidae) on an active vent chimney at the depth of 795 m. Stygiopontius senokuchiae n. sp. is most closely related to S. teres Humes, 1996 but clearly distinguished from the latter species by the possession of the following characters: the basis of leg 1 with an attenuated inner process; the genital double somite with a conical process lateral to the genital opening; and caudal rami without distal process. The findings of the copepod in the present study represents the first record of nominal species of the Dirivultidae from Japanese waters and a record of the shallowest depth of the genus. A key to species of the genus Stygiopontius from Western Pacific is provided.

Four species of copepods are described based on specimens of both sexes from tegulid top shells (Vestigastropoda) caught from coastal waters of southern Japan. Three species, including two undescribed and one known of the genus Panaietis (Copepoda: Cyclopoida: Anthessiidae) were found in the pharynx and esophagus of gastropods. Panaietis incamerata Stebbing, 1900, P. doraconis n. sp., and P. satsuma n. sp. are distinguished from its congeners by the dorsal plates on the first pedigerous somite, the genital somite, the shape of the spines on legs, the number of setae on legs 1 and 2, and the position and shape of leg 5. Pseudanthessius imo n. sp. (Cyclopoida: Pseudanthessiidae) was found in the mantle cavity of the host. This copepod differs from its congeners in the proportions of the caudal ramus, the armature and proportion of the antenna, the armature of the exopod and general shape of the endopod of leg 4, and the presence of a post-rostral process.

Lernaeascus kabuto sp. nov. (Cyclopoida: Philichthyidae) is described based on specimens of both sexes collected from two species of angelfish (Actinopterygii: Pomacanthidae), the purplemask angelfish Centropyge venusta (Yasuda and Tominaga, 1969) and the yellow angelfish C. heraldi Woods and Schultz, 1953, caught in the East China Sea near Kumejima Island, Japan. Lernaeascus kabuto sp. nov. is easily distinguished from its congener, L. nematoxys Claus, 1886, by the following characters: the male has a pair of elongate, distomedially notched dorsal plates on the second pedigerous somite, four abdominal somites, a pair of dorsal hamuli on the third abdominal somite, a non-bifurcate genital operculum, a curved proximal antennulary segment, a naked maxillule, a maxilla without a posteriorly-directed process on the syncoxa, and the endopod of leg 1 modified into a simple spine; and the female has a triangular antenna, a styliform process on the labrum, and three setae on the exopods of legs 1 and 2.

Infections with the pennellid Peniculus minuticaudae Shiino, 1956 occurred on three species of marine fishes, the unicorn leatherjacket filefish, Aluterus monoceros (L.), the hairfinned leatherjacket, Paramonacanthus japonicus (Tilesius), and the brown-banded butterflyfish, Roa modesta (Temminck &amp; Schlegel), held at a public aquarium in Kagoshima, Japan. Using specimens from the aquarium and type material, the postmetamorphic and premetamorphic adult females of P. minuticaudae are redescribed. The adult male, copepodid I, and late chalimus stages are described for the first time. The three fish species represent new host records for P. minuticaudae. Fishes were found heavily infected with P. minuticaudae, and extensive lesions associated with infections were found on the skin and around the fin rays of R. modesta. While pennellids usually use two hosts during their life cycle, it is very likely that P. minuticaudae completes its life cycle using one host, as suggested by copepodids, chalimi, adult males, premetamorphic adult females, and postmetamorphic adult females of the parasite all being found on a single fish.

Currently, many fish parasites have been dispersed worldwide via the movement of fishes for food, sport, or the aquarium trade. The freshwater parasitic copepod Neoergasilus japonicus (Harada, 1930) is such an example: it is native to eastern Asia, but has been introduced to southern Asia, Europe, and North America. Since N. japonicus has been regarded as an important alien parasite in such regions, more information is needed on the ecology and host-parasite relationships of this species. In this study, specimens of N. japonicus were collected from the following seven alien freshwater fishes on Okinawa-jima Island, southern Japan: redbelly tilapia (Tilapia zillii), Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), and Nile tilapia (O. niloticus niloticus) (Perciformes: Cichlidae); bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) (Perciformes: Centrarchidae); Indian glassy fish (Pseudambassis ranga) (Perciformes: Ambassidae); mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae); and vermiculated sailfin catfish (Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus) (Siluriformes: Loricariidae). Copepods occurred on alien fishes taken from reservoirs, but were absent on those from rivers. The dorsal fin was most heavily infected, followed by the anal fin, gills, and body surface. The native freshwater fishes in our sampling locations have been replaced by alien fishes that were introduced from various regions of the world. Our results therefore showed that this low host-specific species can persist by utilizing alien fishes as hosts even after the native fishes have either disappeared or greatly decreased in abundance. A list is also given of fishes (88 species and 3 subspecies in 7 orders and 16 families) reported as hosts of N. japonicus.

A new genus and species of copepod, Ttetaloia hoshinoi, of the poecilostomatoid family Chondracanthidae is described based on specimens removed from the body surface of three species of triplefins (Perciformes: Tripterygiidae), Enneapterygius etheostomus (Jordan &amp; Snyder) (type host), E. miyakensis Fricke, and Springerichthys bapturus (Jordan &amp; Snyder), collected in the coastal waters of Izu-Oshima Island and the Izu Peninsula, the North Pacific Ocean, Japan. The new genus resembles Diocus by sharing some important characters in the female, such as a squat trunk bearing well-developed posterolateral processes, a pair of minute caudal rami situated on the midventral surface of the genito-abdomen, and unmodified and biramous legs 1 and 2. The male of the new genus also shares distinct body somites, an atrophied tip on the antenna, and three pairs of legs with the males of Diocus. However, it is clearly differentiated from Diocus by the combination of the following characters: the female has a body comprised of a head and trunk, a head composed of the cephalosome fused with the first and second pedigers and bearing two pairs of cephalothoracic processes on the ventrolateral surface, an unsegmented, asetose antennule, and an accessory process on the terminal uncinate segment of the antenna; and the male has the cephalosome distinctly separated from the first pediger and legs 1 to 3 are all highly vestigial, with the first two pairs consisting of setose knobs and the third pair represented by a minute conical process.

The heteronemertean Baseodiscus mexicanus (Bürger, 1893) was previously known exclusively from the eastern Pacific, except for fragmentary records from Palau and Indonesia, which suggested a possible amphi-Pacific tropical distribution. A single specimen of B. mexicanus collected in Okinawa, Japan, represents the first record of this species from Japanese waters and provides additional evidence for the occurrence of the species in the western Pacific. Baseodiscus mexicanus is strikingly similar in appearance to a sympatric moray eel, Gymnomuraena zebra (Shaw, 1797) (Actinopterygii: Anguilliformes: Muraenidae), possibly indicating a relationship of mimicry between them.

Two new species of Taeniacanthus Sumpf, 1871 (Copepoda, Taeniacanthidae) are described from filefishes (Monacanthidae) caught in the Indo-West Pacific region: T. brayae n. sp. from Pervagor melanocephalus (Bleeker) collected from five localities within the Central Indo-Pacific realm and T. mcgroutheri n. sp. from Monacanthus chinensis (Osbeck) and Paramonacanthus choirocephalus (Bleeker) caught off the Australian coast. Taeniacanthus brayae n. sp. and T. mcgroutheri n. sp. are distinguished from their congeners by the presence of an elongate terminal endopodal segment of the antenna, a spinulated terminal process and one seta on the maxillary basis, six elements on the terminal exopodal segment of legs 2–4 and an armature of II, I, 2 and II, I, 1 on the terminal endopodal segments of legs 2 and 3, respectively. Taeniacanthus brayae n. sp. can be readily distinguished from T. mcgroutheri n. sp. by having one row (rather than multiple rows) of spinules on the large pectinate process of the antenna, four setae (rather than three) on the maxillule and a 3-segmented (rather than 2-segmented) endopod on legs 2–4. New host and/or locality records for the taeniacanthids Cirracanthus monacanthi (Yamaguti, 1939), C. spinosus Dojiri &amp; Cressey, 1987, Nudisodalis acicula Dojiri &amp; Cressey, 1987 and Taeniacanthus aluteri (Avdeev, 1977) parasitic on triggerfishes and filefishes, as well as supplementary morphological information for the females and the first descriptions of the males of C. monacanthi, C. spinosus and N. acicula, are also included.

Three new species of pennellid copepods are described based on specimens taken from gobiid fishes. Creopelates nohmijimensis n. sp. was found on Priolepis boreus (Snyder) in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. This new species is distinguishable from its sole congener, C. floridus Shiino, 1958, by the presence of four finely digitate lobes on the cephalothorax and in having four pairs of legs occurring closely together at the anterior end of the neck. Two new species of Cardiodectes, C. asper n. sp. and C. bertrandi n. sp., were collected, from Trimma grammistes (Tomiyama) off IzuOshima Island, Japan and Eviota sp. off the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, respectively. Cardiodectes asper n. sp. is distinguished from its 12 congeners by the absence of the abdomen, byhaving a trunk not longer than twice of its width, a cephalothorax with three pairs of lateral lobes, and a pair of neck lobes carrying leg 3 on the posterior surface of their bases. Cardiodectes bertrandi n. sp. is identifiable by the presence of two pairs of lateral cephalothoracic lobes, with smaller anterior pairs; a trunk twice as long as wide; and leg 3 located at the posterior end of the anterior neck lobe.

Eleven new species of the genus Hatschekia Poche, 1902 (Copepoda: Siphonostomatoida: Hatschekiidae) are described based on female specimens from triggerfishes (Tetraodontiformes: Balistidae) caught in coastal waters of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. These include Hatschekia hemicyclium n. sp. on Rhinecanthus rectangulus (Bloch &amp; Schneider), R. aculeatus (L.) and R. verrucosus (L.); H. jonesi n. sp. on Sufflamen bursa (Bloch &amp; Schneider) and S. fraenatum (Latreille); H. kabatai n. sp. and H. izenaensis n. sp. on Xanthichthys lineopunctatus (Hollard); H. churaumi n. sp. on Pseudobalistes flavimarginatus (Rüppell); H. zanpa n. sp. and H. fukurubi n. sp. on Balistapus undulatus (Park); H. mongarah n. sp. on Balistoides conspicillum (Bloch &amp; Schneider); H. nakamurai n. sp. on Melichthys vidua (Richardson); H. mihkagan n. sp. on Odonus niger (Rüppell); and H. pseudobalistesi n. sp. on Pseudobalistes fuscus (Bloch &amp; Schneider). Ten of the 11 new species, with the exception of H. fukurubi n. sp., share the intercoxal sclerites of legs 1 and 2 armed with 4 processes. This character differs from 87 of the known 97 species in Hatschekia. Of the 20 species with this character, the 10 new species are separated from each other mainly by the following morphological characters: the number of setal elements in the leg armature, on the antennule and the caudal ramus, the presence of posterior lobes on the trunk, the segmentation and form of the abdomen, and the length ratios of certain body parts.

Infection with the lernaeopodid copepod <i>Clavella parva</i> was found in gold-eye rockfish <i>Sebastes thompsoni</i> broodstock kept at an aquaculture institute in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan. A description of female and male adults of <i>C. parva</i> is given. This is the first record of <i>C. parva</i> from Japan and a new host record. The parasite was likely introduced to the institute by the fish that had been reared in cages kept in natural waters. No infection was observed again after manual removal of the copepods. The species occurred most abundantly on the dorsal and caudal fins, followed by the anal fin. Literary information on the geographical distribution and hosts of <i>C. parva</i> is reviewed.
