Jpn. J. For. Plann. 53: 53~62, 2020 At tree-harvesting sites, grading logs are generally made from trees. To maximize the profitability of log operations, wood conversion, which determines the quality grade of logs and timber-yield percentage, largely depends on the adherence to appropriate procedures by forest workers. In this study, we collected data on logs at a production site in real time and assessed their potential applications. Stem-curve equations were developed by measuring trimming length, log length, top end length, and the cutting diameter of each end when the lumber was ready for processing. Next, we analyzed the shape of fallen trees and estimated the timber-yield percentage and quality grade. The timber-yield percentage of cedar wood was consistent with previously documented values in the Osumi area. Furthermore, when the frequency of the quality class was analyzed using the shape ratio as an index, a correlation between the B and C-grade logs and the shape ratio was revealed; however, there was no significant correlation between the shape ratio and A-grade logs.

For. Plann. 57: 37~44, 2024 Experiments to produce dried fuel chips by natural drying of standing Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) trees using girdling treatment were performed. Ten trees were sampled from a 48-year-old stand for girdling that had been dried for 16 months, and five control trees without treatment were cut and chipped for each tree. The chip moisture contents (wet-based) were measured by the oven drying method and compared. Thus, nine girdling-treated trees had died from 3.5 to 13.5 months and could produce dried fuel chips with less than 42% moisture content. On the other hand, one girdling-treated tree had survived for 16 months, and the control trees showed high moisture content. Significant differences were observed between the moisture contents of died and survived trees by ANOVA. These results supported the feasibility of producing dried fuel chips from dead trees using girdling, which could be used for wood chip boilers.

Log production is increasing as mature forest resources increase, operation areas expand, and forest machinery advances. The material processing status and sales performance in the log production process are essential forestry management information; however, such information is rarely applied. Here, we examined lumber data recorded at the logging site to analyze stem-curve equations of felled trees and assessed the lumbering method, calculating the average log sale price from the material sales records. Based on these data, we produced standard log sizes, stem shapes, and simplified log patterns of the experimental forests. The results of trial calculations of the volumes and sales amounts of the material production site using a model indicated a high consistency of calculations with actual sales results.

The restoration of degraded forests is the focus of global attention. Effective restoration requires information on the condition of degraded forests. This study aimed to understand the conditions of illegally logged stands that had also experienced inappropriately short rotations between legal logging cycles in natural production forests in Myanmar. Four rectangular plots (each 0.64 ha) were established in 2013. The plots included illegally logged stumps in three compartments where the latest legal logging was conducted in 2011 after very short rotations between legal logging cycles (up to five harvests between 1995 and 2011, compared with a recommended 30-year logging cycle). Using data from the field measurements in 2013 on the legal and illegal stumps and living trees, we reconstructed stand structure just before and after legal logging in 2011. Before the legal logging in 2011, there were variations in stand structure and the composition of commercial species among four plots. Illegal logging (14–31 trees ha−1 ) was much higher than legal logging (0–11 trees ha−1 ). Illegal logging targeted six to nine species that were suitable for high-quality charcoal from various sized trees, while legal logging targeted one or two timber species with a diameter at breast height (DBH) larger than 58 cm. The number of remaining trees in 2013 ranged from 33 to 181 trees ha−1 . There was a negative relationship with the number of bamboo clumps, which varied from 6 to 145 clumps ha−1 . Bamboo-dominated stands with a low remaining stock of commercial trees may need active restoration such as bamboo cutting and replanting of commercial species. Bamboo cutting could generate income for the local community.

This study examined the effects of weeding schedules on shrub quantity and operation time for improvement cutting in 13 year old sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) stands. We also assessed the total operation time, which included both weeding and improvement cutting, with different weeding schedules. Then, we confirmed the state of competition between planted sugi trees and shrubs. As a result, shrub density was affected by weeding frequency, and shrub basal area and mean height were affected a year after the previous weeding. The shortest operation time was annual weeding, which was implemented annually from the 1st to 6th year after planting (11.9-12.6 h/ha). Three-time weeding was implemented in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years after planting and required about twice as much time as annual weeding (24.5-32.3 h/ha). The total operation time was longest with annual weeding (155.1-181.3 h/ha). Most of the sugi trees in this study site were not in competition with shrubs. We concluded that the operation time of improvement cutting increased with decreasing weeding frequency. However, the total operation time decreased with reducing weeding frequency. Additionally, improvement cutting may be omitted because of competition, and it is more effective for reducing initial silviculture costs.

This study identified the cost-effective weeding schedules for reducing weeding cost. First, we used a Monte Carlo method to simulate 7-year-old sugi (Cryptomeria Japonica) mean height and cumulative weeding operation time under different combinations of weeding timing and frequency from 0 to 6 times after planting. Then, we calculated operation time per sugi mean height to express cost-effectiveness. Moreover, to evaluate the stability of the cost-effectiveness, we calculated coefficient of variation for sugi mean height, cumulative operation time and operation time per sugi height. Each coefficient of variation was lower when weeding frequency was equal to or more than three times. The operation time per sugi height decreased when weeding was conducted in the first or second year after planting. We conclude that the three-treatment weeding frequency including the first- or second-year weeding is more effective weeding for the reduction of weeding costs.

We investigated the occurrence of plant species in the understories of three agroforestry (AF) patches dominatedby pine (Pinus merkusii), teak (Tectona grandis) and eucalypt (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) (hereafter, P, T, and E)in East Java, Indonesia, in order to observe relative plant occurrences in relation to the AF types and their adjacency. We recorded the presence/absence of all vascular plants (height < 1 m) occurring in sample quadrats (1m × 1 m) placed along transects across the border of P-T and P-E patches with different distance from the patchborders. At each quadrat, coverage of litter and vegetation, the sky factor (SF) and soil water content (SWC)were also measured. Altogether 52 species including 29 native species were recorded in the three AFtypes. P, T and E consisted of 32, 20 and 35 species, including 16, 11, and 18 native species and 8, 6 and 13species that were specific to each type, respectively. The difference in the specific species were partly attributedby the relatively high SF in E and thick litter cover of the forest floor in T. These results indicated that thevariability among different AF types contributed to more than half of the total and native species richness in thestudied AF patches, suggesting an advantage of the having landscape consist of mosaics of different AF typesfor the conservation of plant species diversity. On the other hand, the species that were common to differentAF types were found in the patch interior (6 and 11 species for P-T and P-E combinations) rather than in thepatch edge (4 species for each of the P-T and the P-E edge). These results suggested that the low contrast ofenvironmental differences between AFs can provide only limited edge effects in terms of promoting the coexistenceof plants with different characteristics within a patch, compared to typical forest edges such as thosebetween closed forests and open grasslands.

The objective of this study was to investigate characteristics of spectral reflectance of arakashi (Quercus glauca) stands using time series Landsat images for developing a method for detecting arakashi stands for sustainable charcoal production. The ratios of surface reflectance, SR of band 2, 3, and 4 to the sum of those SRs (B-rate, G-rate and R-rate) and NDVI were calculated using Landsat images for the period from March to August. This period included the flushing season of arakashi as they shed old leaves and form new leaves. Trend analysis of time series change in those indices were performed for pure arakashi stands and evergreen broad-leaved stands occupied by other species in Misato Town, and also among densely and sparsely arakashi-dominated evergreen broad-leaved stands in Aya Town, Japan. Comparative analysis did not reveal any explicit trend differences in the time series in the indices, while Ortho-photos of arakashi pure stands developed from the aerial images using an UAV highlighted the explicit decrease in B-rate and the explicit increase in G-rate after the flushing season.

Illegal logging is a globally important issue, but there is dearth of quantitative information on the spatial and temporal patterns of illegal logging on the ground. We measured the size, species, and ages of stumps from illegally or legally logged trees along a total of 10 km of 20-m-wide transects in traditional production forests of Myanmar. The number and basal area of stumps resulting from illegal logging were 9.93- and 3.89-fold greater, respectively, than those of legal logging. Illegal logging always targeted high-quality trees for timber, but it increased significantly after legal logging. Spatial patterns of illegal logging varied before, during and after legal logging. More illegal logging occurred in areas that were closer to old footpaths before legal logging, but more illegal logging occurred closer to main and logging roads after legal operations. We conclude that current legal logging operations facilitate illegal logging because the construction of logging roads makes it easier for illegal loggers to transport their harvests. Therefore, the government should enforce existing rules that require that logging roads be decommissioned and rendered impassable after the cessation of legal logging operations.

The conservation of selectively logged tropical forests has received increasing attention, especially under the REDD+ scheme of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. However, knowledge of the structure of large-scale logged forests remains limited, especially in seasonally dry tropical regions, while there have been many studies on intact old-growth closed-canopy tropical forests. In this study, data from 327 plots were used in a large-scale forest inventory with systematic sampling covering 139,360 ha to reveal the condition of selectively logged mixed-deciduous forest managed traditionally under the Myanmar selection system (MSS). The overall averages (±SE) for the trees > 10 cm DBH were 140 ± 4.95 trees/ha for tree density, 6.18 ± 0.26 m2/ha for basal area and 66.2 ± 3.17 Mg/ha for aboveground biomass. These values are lower than or close to the lower end of the reported values in undisturbed or even disturbed tropical forests. There were very few harvestable large trees of commercial species. We conclude that there has been widespread large-scale forest degradation in the traditionally logged forest of our study site. The possible reasons for forest degradation include the shorter cutting-cycle than the MSS-standard of 30 years, more illegal logging for timber than legal logging, and local demand for charcoal. Restoration of the degraded forests should be prioritized, together with control of illegal logging.

This study investigated the effects of weeding frequency, slope aspect and initial tree density on the mortality and accidental cutting of planted Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) in southern Kyushu. To predict the probability of mortality and accidental cutting,we used the multinomial logistic regression model using weeding frequency, slope aspect and initial tree density. The highest mortality on north- and south-facing slopes was found in non weeding plot (33.3%) and every-year weeding plot (16.9%), respectively. Accidental cutting of planted Sugi was found in 3 or 4 times weeding plots. Multinomial logistic regression model showed that mortality was affected by slope aspect and initial tree density. Mortality decreased with the increase of weeding frequency on northfacing slope, while mortality was invariable regardless of weeding frequency on south-facing slope. Accidental cutting rate was invariables regardless of weeding frequency on both slopes. The mortality rate and accidental cutting rate under the 1,500 trees/ha density was higher than that under the 3,000 trees/ha. These results suggest that weeding frequency should be determined according to slope aspect and initial tree density.
