    <p>This experiment was aimed at establishing the method of producing large fruits of loquat (<i>Eriobotrya japonica</i> (Thunb.) Lindl.). Using ‘Nagasakiwase’ (open field cultivation), ‘Mogi’ (open field cultivation), and ‘Natsutayori’ (plastichouse cultivation), we investigated the effects of different branch managements (only central shoot, central shoot + one lateral shoot, and central shoot + two lateral shoots) and flower cluster thinning rates (50%, 30%, and non-treatment) on fruit weight, branch structure and the canopy of the loquat. All cultivars in the treatment of a few bearing shoots had the largest diameters, fruit weight and number of leaves in both that and per fruit than other treatments. ‘Nagasakiwase’ at 50% and ‘Natsutayori’ at 30% flower cluster thinning rates had heavier fruit weights and larger bearing shoot diameters than other treatments. There was no significant difference in any of the treatments of ‘Mogi’. The relationship between the branch structure and fruit weight of all the cultivars was under r = 0.54, or uncorrelated. In ‘Mogi’ at 50% flower cluster thinning rate, plant coverage rate was low, and the sky factor area rate and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) were high, but the leaf area index was the same in all treatments. All branch managements of ‘Mogi’ had the same plant coverage rates, sky factor area rate and PAR. Indicating that in order to produce large loquat fruits, it is effective to have fewer branches and improved light from the receiving environment of the canopy with a low fruit cluster rate.</p>

    <p>The results of our previous experiment showed that water yam (<i>Dioscorea alata</i> L.) was able to grow under low fertility soil conditions without nitrogen fertilization. Moreover, changing δ<sup>15</sup>N values suggested that nitrogen is absorbed from the air. The objective of this study, therefor, was to confirm and identify the nitrogen-fixing bacteria in water yam plants. The nitrogen fixation ability of isolated bacteria was measured using the acetylene reduction assay in semi-solid nitrogen free medium. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed nine genera in the stems and roots. These isolates were shown to be related to genus <i>Bacillus</i>,<i> Cohnella</i>,<i> Rhizobium</i>,<i> Kosakonia</i>,<i> Azospirillum</i>,<i> Pantoea</i>,<i> Dyella</i>,<i> Enterobacter</i>, and <i>Ralstonia</i>. This is the first result that NFB were isolated from water yam plant cultivated under low soil fertility condition at Miyako Island, Japan.</p>

    <p>This study compared the growth and curcumin contents of <i>in vitro</i> regenerated and conventionally propagated <i>Curcuma longa</i>, <i>C. aromatic</i>, and <i>C. zedoaria</i> plants. The <i>in vitro</i> regenerated plants (IRPs) of all three species had an acceptable survival rate in the field (≥93%), suggesting that it is feasible to transplant <i>Curcuma</i> IRPs. In <i>C. longa</i>, the shoot and total rhizome dry weights (DWs) of conventionally propagated plants (CPPs) were 137.3 and 225.2 g, respectively, which were similar to or lower than the corresponding values in IRPs that were transplanted in April and similar to the corresponding values in IRPs that were transplanted in May. In <i>C. aromatic</i> and <i>C. zedoaria</i>, there was no significant difference in shoot growth between IRPs that were transplanted in April and CPPs, but the total rhizome DWs tended to be higher in the latter. In all three species, the shoot growth and rhizome yield of the IRPs increased as the planting time was brought forward, and there was a significant positive correlation between the shoot and rhizome DWs in the IRPs across all transplanting times (r = 0.88, p < 0.01). The curcumin contents of the rhizomes of <i>C. longa</i> and <i>C. aromatic</i> decreased as the transplanting time was delayed, but there was no significant difference in the curcumin contents of the rhizomes of IRPs that were transplanted in April and May and CPPs. These findings suggest that acceptable rhizome and curcumin yields can be obtained by cultivating IRPs of <i>Curcuma</i> spp. However, it is also necessary to consider bringing the planting time forward to increase these yields.</p>

    <p>The relationship between nitrogen absorption and growth of lesser yam (<i>Dioscorea esculenta</i> L.) is not clearly understood. The results of our previous experiment that lesser yam was able to grow under poor fertile soil conditions without nitrogen fertilization; however, the source of nutrition was not identified. This study, which was conducted from April 2015 to January 2016 aimed to determine whether nitrogen-fixing endophytic bacteria are associated with lesser yam. Growth with urea (N treatment), with cow manure (CM treatment) and without nitrogen (control) was compared. N and CM treatment had a positive effect on growth and tuber yield in soil with poor organic matter. Control plants presented with yellowish leaves, but grew until harvest and had a tuber yield comparable with other treatments. Changing natural isotope values (δ<sup>15</sup>N) under N and CM treatment suggested that nitrogen was absorbed from the urea and cow manure, respectively; however, the source of nitrogen in the control plants was not identified. Isolation of nitrogen-fixing endophytic bacteria using an acetylene reduction activity test and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed five species of in the stem and roots of the lesser yam plants. These species were shown to be related to species in the genera <i>Azospirillum</i>, <i>Devosia</i>, <i>Klebsiella</i>, <i>Rhizobium</i> and <i>Xanthomonas</i>. The <i>Rhizobium</i> sp. was found in stem and the others were observed in the roots of lesser yam. All these species are known as nitrogen fixing bacteria and associate with plants growth. This is the first report to identify nitrogen-fixing endophytic bacteria associated with lesser yam.</p>
