    Abstract

The color of pyroclasts is fundamental, because it reflects various magma properties and eruption processes, including particle morphology, chemistry, and petrological characteristics. However, deriving the componentry ratio (CR) of pyroclasts for ongoing eruption monitoring remains challenging due to the lack of a robust quantitative standard. The derivation of the CR, as well as other petrological analyses, is too laborious and time-consuming to introduce as a sustainable monitoring method. To address this, we employed spectroscopic colorimetry to rapidly and quantitatively describe eruptive product colors, enabling CR derivation based on clear, objective standards for ash particle classification. Through color spectroscopy of bulk and sieved ash samples, we analyzed the major size fraction for time-series samples during the waxing stage of the 2017–2018 Shinmoe-dake eruption in Kirishima volcano, Southwest Japan. Our findings reveal that the color changes in bulk ash systematically changed with the evolution of componentry. This temporal color change was due to an increase in the amount of vesicular particles with clear glass against dark angular lava particles, as well as a grain size change, which we interpret as an indication of a transition from phreatic/phreatomagmatic to magmatic eruption. Subsequently, the color of the ash changed when the amount of different lava particles increased gradually, coinciding with a shift toward a more dominant effusion of lava. As the lava effusion continued, a slight reddening of the ash, indiscernible to the naked eye, was clearly detected by the spectrometer before the onset of intermittent Vulcanian eruptions. We interpreted this reddening as oxidation resulting from decreased ascent speed and caprock formation, which accumulates overpressure for Vulcanian explosions. These results highlight the potential of rapid, objective color value and componentry derivation for sustainable quasi-real-time monitoring of ongoing eruption materials.

Mt Fuji had preferentially effused basaltic magma since its initiate of activity at about one hundred thousand years ago. In the Younger stage (5,600yrsBP〜), however, it became to spout occasionally andesitic or dacitic materials to be involved in air-fall deposits or pyroclastic flows, such as, Hoei scoria or Osawa pyroclastic flows. Andesitic magma is solely found as melt-inclusions in phenocrystic minerals in the Older stage (100,000〜10,000yrsBP). This suggests that some kind of changes might have occurred in the magma plumbing system of Mt Fuji. To investigate such possibility, we measured whole-rock chemical compositions of the representative scoria layers of the Younger stage erupted in and around the summit and Hoei craters, and interpreted the results based on our recent model of magma plumbing system of Mt Fuji, consisting of the deep basaltic and the shallow andesitic chambers. The compositions of the scoria layers of the younger stage showed high FeO*/MgO ratio with high and varied TiO_2 and K_2O contents, which are the same as the general characteristics of Mt Fuji as pointed by previous studies. Detailed comparison with the scoria layers showed that compositions of the Younger stage had slightly but systematically higher SiO_2 content - occasionally basaltic andesite - than those of the Older stage. These chemical differences can be explained by existence of more differentiated magma having higher SiO_2 content in the shallow chambers in the Younger stage, compared to those in the Older stage, rather than by increase of the mixing ratio of the similar differentiated magma of the Older stage. Mixing such a differentiated magma with a basaltic magma newly raised from the deep chamber can generate basalts having slightly high SiO_2 content as erupted in the Younger stage. Although cause of generating SiO_2-rich magma in the Younger stage is unclear, it might have occurred associated with the inactive period suggested by the Fuji-black soil layer lying between the two stages. The shallow dacitic magma chamber assumed in the model of the Hoei eruption might be an extreme case where the magma in the shallow chamber evolved to be highly SiO_2-rich composition.

Fuji volcano is the largest stratovolcano in Japan whose edifice consists of the alternation of basaltic lava flows and pyroclastic deposits, but very few pyroclastic density current deposits have been reported. We found two deposits of basaltic composition that are interpreted to be formed by pyroclastic flow at localities farther than 10km from the summit on the southern foot of Mt. Fuji. Each deposit is stratified with dense massive layer, well-sorted lapilli-rich layer, and fine ash layer, fundamentally in ascending order. Distribution of the three types of layers shows that the lower two layers deposited only on the bottom of valley whereas the uppermost layer deposited also on the bank. These facts indicate that generation mechanism of the deposits is pyroclastic flow but different from those reported in previous studies at Mt. Fuji. The vesicular lithology without any bombs or agglutinate blocks may imply that these flows were closely related to explosive eruption like Plinian style rather than immediate collapse of pyroclastic cone or fire fountain such that observed in Stromblian eruptions. The results of radiocarbon age were around 8400 yBP for charcoal samples in layers just below and above one of the pyroclastic flow deposits. The other pyroclastic flow deposit is covered by a lava flow of 9 ka. These results show that the two pyroclastic flows occurred in similar age when the edifice of Mt. Fuji is thought to have grown most voluminously but moderately by effusive eruptions in its volcanic evolution history of 100 kyrs.

The sequence and eruption styles of the 1813 eruption of Suwanose-jima Volcano, SW Japan, are reconstructed on the basis of detailed stratigraphical and petrographic features of juvenile materials. The mode of generation of the proximal deposits is discussed in the light of their distribution, surface morphology and also inner structure. It is suggested that a large pyroclastic cone was generated by successive fountaining from fissure and some craters, and that lava flows are generated in two ways; by effusion directly from vents and by secondary flowage of the pyroclastic cone. The juvenile materials of the 1813 eruption are divided into three types in terms of water content and apparent density; low porosity scoria (LPS), high porosity scoria (HPS) and dense spatters and lava flows (DSL). Direct measurements of water content for fresh samples show that the water content of LPS is systematically higher (0.2-4 wt%) than HPS and DSL (0.1-0.2 wt%), whereas mineralogical data of phenocrysts indicate that all these types had similar water content (-3 wt%) just before the eruption. It is suggested that a part of magma quenched and stopped exsolving gas due to interaction with ground water at the depth of〜100 m to form LPS, while the rest continued exsolving gas up to the surface to form HPS and DSL. The difference in apparent density between HPS and DSL is accounted for by different degrees of bubble separation at the surface.
