    We studied the recruitment and growth patterns of the portunid crab Charybdis bimaculata in deep water for the first time. The study area, Kagoshima Bay, is a semi-enclosed, deep-water bay characterized by steep slopes, with unique caldera walls where C. bimaculata is one of the dominant decapods and acquiring commercial importance. The monthly length-frequency method was used from a total of 8265 individuals collected over a three study periods—1990s, 2010s, and 2020s—at the central basin (174–229 m depth) and one study period 1990s at the channel area (122–136 m depth). Carapace width ranged from 9.5 to 42.7 mm in males, and 9.5 to 35.0 mm in females. The overall sex ratio significantly deviated from 1:1 favoring females. Recruitment was estimated to occur between September to November in this bay. Recruitment seemed to be synchronized with the peak spawning season with a time lag of 2–4 months. Growth was appositely delineated by the von Bertalanffy growth function for both sexes. The growth equations revealed that males had lower K values and higher asymptotic sizes than females. Spatial and temporal comparison in growth parameters between the same sexes found no statistical differences except in one case.

    <p>This study investigated size at sexual maturity of the male sergestid shrimp <i>Lucensosergia lucens</i> (“Sakura-ebi” in Japanese). The shrimps were captured in the inner part of Suruga Bay, Japan in August 2013 using experimental trawls. Carapace length (CL), body length (BL), development of petasma, and presence of spermatophores in the terminal ampoule were documented. Probabilities of maturity as a function of CL were modeled using general linear models with a binomial and logit link function and predicted the CL at which 50% of individuals were mature (<i>CL</i><sub>50</sub>). Morphologically mature males had a petasma connected with the pars astringens, and the basal part of the pars media was developed. In physiologically mature males, chambers in terminal ampoules were filled with spermatophores, including spermatozoa and appendages. <i>CL</i><sub>50</sub> (mm) was estimated to be 8.87 (=27.86 mm BL) and 7.84 (=24.65 mm BL) based on the morphological and physiological criteria, respectively. It is believed that most of the age-0 males attain sexual maturity within the first year and mature males are exploited in the autumn fishing season (October–December).</p>

    <p>To characterize the reproductive behavior of the land crab <i>Cardisoma carnifex</i>, their nighttime activities on the ground surface around their burrows were monitored using infrared-triggered cameras on the Iriomote-jima Island, Japan. Matings of three pairs were recorded near the entrance of the female’s burrow. The results showed that the species shares a common mating pattern of gecarcinids: hard-female mating and short courtship. The males did not exhibit courtship behavior, except for drumming on the surface sediment. The duration of copulation was longer (29, 30, and 49 min) than that in the reference data (1–10 min). After mating, males guarded their mate’s burrow and plugged the opening from the outside. By contrast, the resident crabs sometimes plug their burrows from the inside. Burrow plugging by <i>C. carnifex</i> males is similar to post-copulatory guarding by males of brachyurans, to prevent multiple matings by females. The non-invasive cameras revealed novel features of mating behavior of <i>C. carnifex</i> such as longer copulation, drumming behavior, and burrow plugging by males.</p>

    The life history characteristics of the mole crab (Hippa truncatifrons) were studied using monthly or bimonthly sampling at a cobble shore on the Miho Peninsula, located in the inner part of Suruga Bay, central Japan, between April 2013 and March 2014. A total of 523 individuals was collected, comprising 276 males (carapace length, CL, 3.4–9.7 mm) and 247 females (CL 4.9–15.0 mm). The number of individuals collected showed two peaks (>10 individuals per station), in early summer and autumn, and decreased to only a few per station in winter. The population exhibited a unimodal CL distribution, with the modes of CL gradually increasing between April and July. Smaller individuals (<4.0 and <7.0 mm CL for males and females, respectively) appeared in August. After August, bimodal distributions of CL were recorded, with fewer individuals in the larger size group. This indicates the mean lifespan was estimated to be almost one year, with some individuals surviving for up to two years after hatching. Ovigerous females were observed between May to September, but were most abundant during June and July. Ovarian development corresponded with the occurrence of ovigerous females. The size at sexual maturity for females was estimated to be 10.2 mm CL. Batch fecundity ranged from seven to 1801 and was correlated with CL for some embryonic stages in all breeding season and early embryonic stages in the early breeding season. Some ovigerous females with late embryonic developmental stages had mature ovaries, indicating multiple spawning by some females during one reproductive season. The Suruga Bay population showed a typical life history similar to that of the Sagami Bay and Hokuriku populations, but different from that of extreme areas, such as Aomori (the northern limit of their range) and an island in Mikawa Bay with large-sized individuals.

    <p>This study investigates the distribution, growth, and reproduction of the fluvial, regional, and vulnerable species, <i>Macrobrachium shokitai,</i> on Iriomote Island in southwestern Japan. Prawns were captured at seven stations along a small, 4.0-km-long river, among ca. 40 rivers on the island. Animals were collected monthly during 2019 and abundance, carapace length (CL), sex, and the presence or absence of eggs attached to pleopods were documented. Prawns were primarily collected at stations >2.7 km above the river mouth at >270 m elevation. Stable, dense populations were observed above the waterfall. The sex ratio was significantly female-biased between January and August. Later in the year the ratio was 1 : 1. A bimodal CL distribution was recorded; with the emergence of larger individuals in some months. Lifespan appeared to be >1 year. Recruits, including several juvenile instars, were found between August and December. Ovigerous females were encountered from April to October but were more abundant from June to August. The phenology and duration of the breeding season were consistent with generic characteristics of the genus throughout subtropical and temperate East Asia.</p>

    This study describes the first thorough investigation of oocyte and embryonic development as well as histologically confirmed size at sexual maturity of female Charybdis bimaculata. A total of 1211 females were collected from the central part of Kagoshima Bay, southern Japan, from October 2018 to January 2020. Six sequential oocyte developmental stages were confirmed by histological examination. C. bimaculata exhibited asynchronous-type ovarian development. Therefore, ovarian maturity status (immature, maturing, and mature) was determined from the most advanced oocyte found in the ovary. Females having oocytes evidencing either germinal vesicle breakdown or migratory nucleus were defined as mature. Mature females ranged from 19.0 to 30.6 mm in carapace width. The size at sexual maturity was estimated to be 21.8 mm in carapace width based on the 50% maturity size. The spawning season was determined from May to November when mature females occurred. Microscopic observation confirmed four sequential embryonic developmental stages. The majority of females with final-stage embryos had mature ovaries signifying continuity of reproduction. Asynchronous-type ovary, continuous reproduction, and consecutive broods suggest multiple spawning in a single spawning season. The incubation period was estimated to be under 1 month for C. bimaculata.

    <p>The life history characteristics of the varunid crab <i>Cyclograpsus pumilio</i> were studied by monthly sampling at a cobble shore in Ooigawa Port (34°46′35.2″N, 138°17′59.3″E), located in the inner part of Suruga Bay, Japan, between March and December 2017. A total of 964 individuals were collected, including 410 males (2.91–5.90 mm carapace width, CW) and 554 females (3.81–10.30 mm CW). The number of individuals collected exceeded 100 each month until August and then abruptly decreased to<10 per month. The monthly frequency distribution of mode CW showed no temporal changes in males and a slight decrease in females, from 9.5 mm in March to 7.0 mm in October. Smaller females of CW<4.5 mm were obtained between April and August. The changes in the relative growth of propodus height in males and abdominal width in females versus CW were determined by model analysis. The sizes at morphological maturity were estimated to be 3.98- and 6.39-mm CW for males and females, respectively. Ovigerous females with CW 6.92–9.29 mm (<i>n</i>=18) were obtained between June and August and again in October. During the study period, the population of <i>C. pumilio</i> in Ooigawa almost went extinct due to habitat loss in September, when a layer of cobbles collapsed following a typhoon. This local population was characterized by very low proportions of ovigerous females (<11%) each month, lower and variable batch fecundity, and shorter recruitment period compared with the proportions found in other areas.</p>
