Official English language education in Japan currently begins in elementary school fifth and sixth grades through so-called language activities, but this
situation is set to change from 2020 when language activities will become part of the third and fourth grade curriculum, while fifth and sixth graders will be taking English as a foreign language. This development, in turn, will prompt revisions of the university programs aiming to educate future elementary school teachers in Japan to equip these teachers with the necessary language education-related knowledge and skills. This study is
based on a one-semester Children's English Activities course offered to second-year student teachers at a private college in Japan. The study uses Bloom's revised taxonomy to gauge whether or not introducing active learning, critical thinking, and reflection as methodologies in the classroom promote higher order thinking of the student teachers and thus contribute to
challenging or changing their attitudes and beliefs about language learning. An initial analysis of over 300 student reflections shows that weekly reflection writing combined with explicit explanations about the structure of deep reflection helped to guide the students toward higher order thinking skills and thus develop their critical thinking ability.

This is a report on an educational practice that aims to train college students to think critically and to measure how successful training can be after one semester of exposure to mini-lectures, exercises and application of critical thinking to different content areas. Two assessment tools were administered at the beginning and the end of the semester and significant improvement in the pre/post critical thinking disposition average scores and in critical thinking skills was observed.

Existing literature on the impact of reading speed on the comprehension level of the reader is divided between a view that considers high reading speed a hindrance to comprehension and the opposing view that asserts that, on the contrary, low reading speed has a negative impact on text comprehension. Most of these studies, however, refer to the native language (L1) reading speed and comprehension and many target readers in their formative stages, i.e., grade school. In contrast, the research regarding reading speed and its impact on comprehension in EFL or ESL environments seem to agree that learners of English can benefit from speed reading training and other activities that enhance reading fluency. This study explores the effects of weekly speed reading exercises on EFL learner reading speed and reading comprehension after one and two semesters of English language reading instruction. The paper presents an overview of the literature and details the methods, data analysis and results of the study, which suggest that speed reading exercises are beneficial for certain groups of college EFL students. The study may be of interest to English language instructors and researchers of teaching methodologies, as well as to English language learners in general.

According to an OECD report (2010), reading frequency and interest in reading for pleasure in one’s native tongue begin to drop in childhood and continue to drop as children become young adults. Therefore, it is not too surprising to find out that while research has long suggested that extensive reading can have great benefits for the language development of foreign language learners, very few schools are introducing or
promoting extensive reading as part of their curricula. English language education in Japan begins in elementary school and, for about half of the population, it continues through college, but when asked, a majority of college freshmen will say they have never read a book in English. This presentation reflects on the merits and demerits of introducing an extensive reading component into the English language curriculum at a national university in Japan based on quantitative and qualitative data after one semester of extensive reading. The numbers show an increase in the reading speed and reading comprehension level of the participants while the survey data offers insights into why the students (and teachers) may not be enjoying the full benefits of extensive reading.
