We propose a perfect crossbar optical switch based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometers, which gives no crosstalk at both cross and bar states even if the power ratio of the couplers deviates from 50:50.

We show the coupling characteristics of a mode multi/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) with a vertically stacked asymmetric directional coupler. Designed multilayer 4-mode MUX/DEMUX has higher coupling efficiency than the conventional in-plane mode MUX/DEMUX.

We examine the characteristics of a 4-stage nested Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical switch with phase generating couplers, and demonstrate that crosstalk is suppressed to less than -40 dB over 200nm wavelength range from 1450 to 1650 nm by choosing six ports among 16 output ports.

We examined light propagation along the spot size converter of silicon photonic wire waveguides, and show there are two maxima in coupling efficiency. An optimal design was given in terms of compactness and high efficiency by changing its dimension and shape.
