A simple rate-based method is proposed for recovering sucrose from sugarcane molasses, focusing on its feasibility for continuous recovery. When ethanol is gently poured onto diluted molasses, sucrose is transferred to ethanol layer along with water, resulting in the formation of a distinct third layer comprising sucrose positioned between the ethanol and diluted molasses. Although this third liquid layer is metastable and dissipates when vigorously stirred, its sucrose concentration reaches a level suitable for sucrose crystal formation. Consequently, a semicontinuous operation for sucrose recovery from diluted molasses is achieved by continuously extracting the third layer while supplying ethanol to the diluted molasses. The concentration changes of sucrose within the third liquid layer over time are predicted using simple mass-transfer models based on diffusion and axial dispersion. While the prediction yields limited success, it underscores the importance of mass transfer from the liquid jet in the third layer and the role of mild mixing within the third layer in facilitating its growth and interior mass transfer. To the best of our knowledge, this study presents the first effective utilization of the third liquid layer in solvent extraction offering a method to control its formation and mass transfer for sugar recovery from molasses.

Sugarcane molasses, by-product of sugar production, contains potassium at relatively high ratio and it has a high potential for the source of potassium fertilizer. The present study proposed a simple two-step precipitation method for the recovery of potassium-containing solid, syngenite, from sugarcane molasses. The first precipitation with water recovered more than 30% of potassium in the original molasses. The second precipitation with the mixture of calcium acetate and sulfuric acid resulted in about 40% of the original molasses. Totally, more than 70% potassium was successfully recovered. The applicability of this method was examined with eight kinds of molasses obtained from eight factories in Japan. For all the molasses, syngenite was successfully recovered without any difficulties in processing, and the recovery ratio was more than 70%. Thus, the method will satisfy the growing demand of potassium fertilizer and also to enhance the sustainability of sugarcane sugar production.

Many correlations have been proposed for bubble size in fluidized beds, mainly for Geldart B particles. For particles with physical properties suitable for fluidized catalyst beds, the bubble size is significantly affected by gas properties. However, there are no correlations that take into account the effect of the properties of fluidizing gases. Reactor models are necessary for the appropriate design and operation of fluidized bed reactors, and bubble size is one of the important parameters in determining the mass transfer coefficient between the bubble phase and emulsion phase in the model. Various gases are used in industrial reaction processes, making it important to correctly consider the influence of gas properties on bubble size. In this study, Geldart A particles were fluidized in a two-dimensional fluidized bed using several fluidizing gases, and the behavior of bubbles and emulsion phase voidage was simultaneously observed. Color movies were created to visually observe the emulsion phase voidage, and the average bubble size under each condition was determined from the images. We confirmed that the bubble size decreases as the emulsion phase voidage increases. The effects of particle size, particle density, gas viscosity, and gas density on bubble size were explained using a previously proposed correlation for apparent viscosity. We emphasized the importance of considering the effects of gas properties in fluidized catalyst beds.

<p>The novel extraction method called "emulsion-flow" is characterized by using a layer of accumulated droplets in the column to supply both phases in the form of droplets. To clarify the flow behavior of both phases in the layer, extraction of iodine from organic to aqueous phase was carried out to enhance visibility of organic phase with the help of iodine. In addition, the mass-transfer in the organic phase was examined by extracting iodine from organic phase to aqueous Na2S2O3 solution. The results indicated that two phases in the droplet layer were in the state of O/W/O emulsion where most of the water flows down in the form of film around the droplets. Also, progress of coalescence of organic-phase droplets during extraction of iodine from organic phase was observed. The height of droplet layer increased with the square of organic phase flow velocity. The trend was the same as that observed for extraction of iodine from the aqueous phase. The mass-transfer capacity coefficient of the organic phase increased linearly with the organic-phase flow velocity, with a small dependence on the aqueous-phase flow velocity. The trend of the distribution of iodine concentration in the column was predicted by solving the convection-diffusion equation with an appropriate setting of the Peclet number. </p>

<p>Strength of axial mixing in the emulsion phase during the progress of extraction was evaluated using the Peclet number under various flow conditions. The Peclet numbers were determined with the established tracer technology which applies inert species for iodine extraction. Very little effect of operating velocities of either aqueous and organic phases was found on the Peclet numbers. This fact indicates that an almost constant degree of axial mixing was kept in this column for different flow velocities of both phases. Furthermore, the degree of axial mixing of the emulsion-flow column was compared with conventional spray and packed columns by plotting the droplet Peclet number against the droplet Reynolds number. Points of the Peclet numbers of emulsion-flow column located in the middle of the spray and the packed columns, which suggests that the strength of axial mixing in the present column is in between spray and packed columns. </p>

<p>The performance of iodine extraction in the emulsion-flow column was evaluated using an indicator of difficulty in separation, height of transfer unit, <i>HTU</i> and of the number of theoretical plates, <i>N</i>th. Resulting <i>HTU</i> values ranged from 0.15 to 0.78 m and <i>N</i>th changed from 0.58 to 1.3. <i>HTU</i> values were formulated in accordance with operating liquid velocities. Despite a 30% margin of error, <i>HTU</i> values were found to be useful in predicting column performance. Observed <i>HTU</i> values were compared with those of conventional extraction columns with or without mechanical agitation. The emulsion-flow column meets the top-level performance of extractors without mechanical agitation, such as packed and spray columns, and performs in the middle range of agitated extractors, although these sacrifice the structure simplicity to assure stable counter-current operation. The advantage of the emulsion-flow column is better <i>HTU</i> values with stable counter-current operation in a simple column structure.</p>

<p>"Emulsion-flow" is a unique regime of counter-current contact between aqueous and organic phases in a column extractor. The operation enables fast mass transfer as well as stable dropwise counter-current of both phases in a simple column-type apparatus. While those advantages have been reported, prediction of the column performance has been difficult because of the lack of correlation with mass transfer coefficient and interfacial area. This study suggests correlation with overall aqueous phase mass transfer capacity coefficient, <i>K</i>w<i>a</i> and the height of emulsion phase, <i>H</i> for various operating conditions. In iodine extraction, velocity of organic phase had a stronger effect on <i>H</i>. Furthermore <i>K</i>w<i>a</i> was correlated with a root of <i>H</i>. This fact suggests that the velocity of the organic phase plays a major role in mass transfer for the case of emulsion-flow. Correlations suggested in the present study are important for rational design and scaling up of emulsion-flow columns.</p>

<p>Our newly developed scheme to evaluate anisotropic thermal conductivity has been extended its scope to include resin materials of higher thermal conductivity. In our previous work, heat input to a test sample was evaluated with an assumption that the temperature profile inside the heating block was sufficiently linear, which is no longer adequate for the resin materials because of its higher thermal resistance. To cope with such situation, we have re-defined thermal equivalent circuit to include the effects occurring inside the heating block in addition to those of the test sample. The results show that thermal equivalent circuit was adequate to evaluate the effects, which suggest that our model can be applied to the resin materials.</p>

In this study, the proposed ultrasound technique at high frequency of 2.4 MHz for removal of methyl tert-butyl ether has been investigated.
The ultrasonic removal mechanism of methyl tert-butyl ether in aqueous solution is complex because of the competition between hydroxyl
radical attack, pyrolysis and hydrolysis reactions. An investigation of removal of methyl tert-butyl ether using sonolysis has performed
here with a kinetics models study. Chemical destruction by sonolysis is rationalized using hydroxyl radical chemistry, in which methyl
tert-butyl ether transfers into the cavitating bubbles and decomposed. The kinetics study indicates that the removal of methyl tert-butyl
ether at different initial concentration namely (2000, 1000 and 500 ppm) is the best fitted with first order kinetic model with a reaction rate
constant of 0.034 min-1. The removal of methyl tert-butyl ether investigated at different reactant volumes inside the ultrasound reactor
found that the lower volume of reactant is preferable on higher volume. The results of removal of methyl tert-butyl ether show that more
than 85 % has obtained, at only 50 min of exposing to ultrasound irradiation even with high initial concentrations.
