    Abstract

    Because of its superior strength, esthetic properties, and excellent biocompatibility, zirconia is preferred for dental prosthetic such as crowns and bridges. However, zirconia crowns and bridges are susceptible to secondary caries owing to margin leakage. Silver is a well-known antibacterial agent, making it a desirable additive to zirconia crowns and bridges for secondary caries prevention. This study focuses on imparting zirconia composite with antibacterial properties to enhance its protective capacity in dental restorations. We used the sol–gel method to dope Ag into zirconia. Silver-doped zirconia powders were prepared at Zr:Ag molar ratios of 100:0,100:0.1, 100:0.5, 100:1, 100:3, and 100:5 (respective samples denoted as Ag-0, Ag-0.1, Ag-0.5, Ag-1, Ag-3, and Ag-5) and were subjected to firing at various temperatures (400–1,000 °C). We performed X-ray diffraction to investigate the crystal phase of these powders and X-ray fluorescence and field emission scanning electron microscopy to analyze their elemental composition and surface morphology, respectively. Moreover, we performed spectrophotometry to determine the L*a*b* color values, conducted dissolution tests, and quantified the Ag content through inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). In addition, we studied the antibacterial activity of the samples. Analyses of the samples fired at ≤600 °C revealed a predominantly white to grayish-white coloration and a tetragonal crystal phase. Firing at ≥700 °C resulted in gray or dark gray coloration and a monoclinic crystal phase. The Ag content decreased after firing at 900 °C or 1,000 °C. Ag-0.5 and above exhibited antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, the minimum effective silver-doped zirconia sample was found to be Ag-0.5. This study allows the exploration of the antimicrobial potential of silver-doped zirconia materials in dental applications such as prosthdontical lining materials, promoting the development of innovative restorations with protective capacity against secondary caries.

    <p>Experimental light-curing pattern resins were fabricated to produce pattern resin materials with adequate dimensional stability. The light-curing pattern resins consisted of poly(n-butyl methacrylate) or poly(iso-butyl methacrylate) (PiBMA) polymers and methacrylate monomers. The physical properties, amount of residual ash after burning, Vickers hardness, flexural strength, and volumetric polymerization shrinkage of each material were determined. The data obtained for the prepared resins were compared with those of a commercially available pattern resin, Palavit G (PG). A lower amount of residual ash was observed for some of the prepared resins than for PG. The Vickers hardness and flexural strength values of all experimental resins were lower than those of PG. The volumetric polymerization shrinkage of all the experimental resins based on PiBMA was lower than that of PG. These results suggest that acrylic light-curing resin materials based on PiBMA may be useful for patterning and indexing during soldering.</p>

    <p>One of the major purposes of dental education is to acquire clinical ability. Dentists should fulfill the patients’ requirements by flexibly applying these clinical ability based on proper knowledge. Especially, prosthodontic treatment requires not only the ability of prosthodontic diagnosis, but also high technical skills. In 2020, a skill examination, as part of the post-clinical clerkship clinical performance examination (Post-CC CPX), will be introduced officially in Japan. This movement is in response to the recent social demand for assuring the clinical ability of dental students upon graduation because the environment of students’ clinical training has dramatically changed and become more complicated with the super-aging of society. Moreover, the Japan Prosthodontic Society introduced a technical skills competition for dental students this year. In this paper, we discuss clear outcomes, methods and assessments of technical training in prosthodontics. As specialists of prosthodontics, we should reconsider how technical training should be as members of an educational institute whose mission is to train high-quality dental students.</p>

    歯学教育の大きな目標のひとつは臨床能力の獲得であり、十分な知識に裏付けられ、臨床における多様性に対応できる技能の習得は必須である。特に補綴臨床においては補綴診断能力のみならず、高い「臨床技能」が必須である。2020年度より一斉技能試験が診療参加型臨床実習後の客観的臨床能力試験(Post-CC CPX)の一部として正式に実施される予定であるが、これは社会的事情を背景として臨床実習の実施形態が大きく変化したことに対して、卒業時の歯学生の技能を担保するために社会に対する説明責任の一端である。また、2019年から補綴歯科学会において全国の歯学生を対象とした学生技能コンペティションが開催されることになった。そこで今回、補綴歯科における「技能教育」のあり方について、明確な到達目標、方略と評価について考えたい。質の高い歯科医師を輩出する責務を負う教育機関の一員として、特に補綴治療の専門家として「技能教育」を再考したい。(著者抄録)

    The introduction of CAD/CAM technology into dentistry has led to rapid computerization, mainly in the field of dental laboratory work. However, tooth preparation is still performed manually using a dental handpiece. The purpose of this study was to automate tooth preparation by developing a robotic dental treatment system. A prototype system with downsized intraoral machining device based on previous research was made and tested. Although there are still improvements to be made, the possibility of automating tooth preparation through robot technology was suggested.

    As As for the effect of firing temperature on mechanical properties of zirconia, it was large in dental Y-TZP. Therefore, it was suggested that low temperature degradation by autoclave was easy to occur if the sintering temperature was high. It was also suggested that even if the holding time of sintering temperature was short, a certain strength could be obtained.
    <BR>
    As for the effect of heating rate on translucency of zirconia, no statistically significant difference was observed even if the heating time from standard firing schedule to sintering temperature was extremely shortened. Therefore, It was suggested that the heating rate to sintering temperature could not affect translucency for both translucent TZP and PSZ.
