    We report here the first mapping of SiO v = 1 J = 5 → 4 maser emission toward the “water fountain” source W 43A in order to explore the central stellar system driving the collimated, bipolar, fast jet. The maser source has a systemic line-of-sight velocity consistent with that of CO J = 2 → 1 emission tracing the jet within ∼2 km s<sup>−1</sup> but a velocity gradient opposite that of the jet. The dynamical center of the maser source is located within ∼10 mas (or ∼20 au) of the brightness peak of the central 1.3 mm continuum emission. The spatiokinematic properties of the SiO J = 5 → 4 and J = 1 → 0 masers suggest that they are associated with the root of a slow (10 km s<sup>−1</sup> < V<inf>outflow</inf> << 100 km s<sup>−1</sup>) outflow with a large opening angle, and the central stellar system is contained within the inner maser region (∼20 au) during a possible common-envelope evolution.

    We successfully measured the trigonometric parallax of Sagittarius A∗ (Sgr A∗) to be 117 ± 17 micro-Arcseconds () using the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) with the newly developed broad-band signal-processing system named "OCTAVE-DAS."The measured parallax corresponds to a Galactocentric distance at the Sun of kpc. By combining the astrometric results with VERA and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) over a monitoring period of 25 yr, the proper motion of Sgr A∗ is obtained to be (μα, μδ) = (-3.133 ± 0.003,-5.575 ± 0.005) mas yr-1 in equatorial coordinates, corresponding to (μl, μb) = (-6.391 ± 0.005,-0.230 ± 0.004) mas yr-1 in Galactic coordinates. This gives an angular orbital velocity of the Sun of = 30.30 ± 0.02 km s-1 kpc-1. We find upper limits to the core wander, Δθ < 0.20 mas (1.6 au), peculiar motion, Δμ < 0.10 mas yr-1 (3.7 km s-1), and acceleration, a < 2.6 yr-2 (0.10 km s-1 yr-1) for Sgr A∗. Thus, we obtained upper mass limits of and for the supposed intermediate-mass black holes at 0.1 and 0.01 pc from the Galactic center, respectively.

    We provide a meta-study of the statistical and individual properties of two volume-complete sets of evolved stars in the solar neighbourhood: (1) 852 stars from the Nearby Evolved Stars Survey (NESS), and (2) a partially overlapping set of 507 evolved stars within 300 pc. We also investigate distance determinations to these stars, their luminosity functions and their spatial distribution. Gaia APSIS GSP-PHOT AENEAS temperatures of bright giant stars often appear to be underestimated. Existing literature on asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars undersamples both the most and least extreme nearby dust-producing stars. We reproduce the literature star formation history of the solar neighbourhood, though stellar-evolution models overpredict the number of AGB stars of ages around 500 Myr. The distribution of AGB stars broadly matches the known 300 pc scale height of the Galactic disc and shows concentration in the direction of the Galactic centre. Most dust-producing carbon stars belong to the Galactic thick-disc population.

    We have achieved the first VLBI detections of the ground vibrational state (v = 0) <sup>28</sup>SiO (hereafter, SiO) and <sup>29</sup>SiO masers of the J = 1→0 rotational transitions, towards the 25 red supergiant (RSG) star, VY Canis Majoris (VY CMa), taking advantage of the high sensitivity of the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) telescopes that coordinate with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. In addition, we successfully detected the SiO J = 1→0 transition in the v = 3) state towards VY CMa for the first time with VLBI. The SiO J = 1→0 maser spot in the v = 0 state was detected in the cross-power spectra taken with the baselines involving the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. The combination of previously reported absolute astrometry and the relative astrometry technique allowed us to derive the location of the SiO v = 0 maser spot, (RA, Dec) = (,) in J2000.0 at an absolute positional accuracy of 100 milliarcseconds (mas). The SiO v = 0 maser spot is offset by the amount of (RA, Dec) = (-150, -300) (mas) to the south-west of the stellar position, suggesting that the v = 0) maser spot is associated with its outflow activity. This observational study demonstrates that the brightest SiO v = 0 maser spot is compact (3 mas), producing an extremely high brightness of K. This indicates that the SiO v = 0 maser action may originate from strong shocks in the stellar wind emanating from this extreme RSG that leads to its intense mass ejection.

    Context. Low- and intermediate-mass stars evolve through the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) when an efficient mass-loss process removes a significant fraction of their initial mass. For most sources, this mass-loss process relies on the interplay between convection, stellar pulsations, and dust formation. However, predicting the mass-loss history of a given star from first principles is complex and not yet feasible at present. At the end of the AGB, at least some stars experience a substantial increase in their mass-loss rate for unknown reasons, leading to the creation of post-AGB objects that are completely enshrouded in thick dusty envelopes. Recent studies have suggested that some of these sources may be the product of interactions between an evolved star with a close companion. Aims. We observed six obscured post-AGB stars (four C-rich and two O-rich sources) to constrain the properties of their circumstellar envelopes, recent mass-loss histories, and initial masses of the central stars. Methods. We used observations of the J = 2−1 line of 13CO, C17O, and C18O with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to determine the circumstellar gas masses and the 17O/18O isotopic ratios, the latter of which can be used to infer initial stellar masses. These results were interpreted in the context of comparisons with stellar evolution models in the literature and existing observations of other post-AGB stars. Results. Based on the inferred 17O/18O isotopic ratios, we find all stars to have relatively low initial masses (<2 M ), contrary to literature indications of higher masses for some sources. One of the C-rich sources, HD 187885, has a low 17O/18O ratio; coupled with a low metallicity, this would imply a relatively low mass (∼1.15 M ) for a carbon star. For all but one source (GLMP 950), we observe kinematic components with velocities of &30 km s−1, which are higher than typical AGB wind expansion velocities. For most sources, these higher velocity outflows display point-symmetric morphologies. The case of Hen 3-1475 is especially spectacular, with the high-velocity molecular outflow appearing to be interleaved with the high-velocity outflow of ionised gas observed at optical wavelengths. Based on the size of the emission regions of the slow components of the outflows, we derived typical kinematic ages associated with the C18O J = 2−1 emission of .1500 years and obtained relatively high associated mass-loss rates (&10−4 M yr−1). The sources with known spectral types are found to have evolved faster than expected, compared to stellar evolutionary models.

    Context. Maser emission of SiO, H2O, and OH is widespread in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with oxygen- (O-) rich envelopes. This emission quickly disappears during the post-AGB phase and is extremely rare in planetary nebulae (PNe). So far, only eight PNe have been confirmed to show OH and/or H2O maser emission, and none have ever been found to show SiO maser emission. Aims. We intend to obtain the first detection of a SiO maser from a PN. Such a detection would provide us with a useful tool to probe mass loss in PNe at a scales of a few AU from the central star, much shorter than the scales traced by H2O or OH masers. Methods. We compiled two different samples. The first one comprises all known PNe with confirmed OH and/or H2O maser emission, as well as two candidate PNe showing OH masers. For the second sample, we compiled single-dish SiO maser detections in the literature, and compared them with catalogs of PNe and radio continuum emission (which could trace photoionized gas in PNe). We identified five targets (either PN or radio continuum sources) within the beam of the single-dish SiO maser observations. We then carried out interferometric observations of both samples with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, to confirm the spatial association between continuum and SiO maser emission. Results. We find no SiO maser emission associated with any confirmed or candidate PN. In all targets, except IRAS 17390-3014, there is no spatial coincidence between SiO masers and radio continuum emission. While in IRAS 17390-3014 we cannot completely rule out a possible association, it is unlikely that the radio continuum emission arises from a PN. Conclusions. The absence of SiO maser emission in PNe showing OH or H2O masers is of special interest, since thermal SiO emission has been reported in at least one of these targets, indicating that SiO molecules can be present in the gas phase. Since some maser-emitting PNe show evidence of having O-rich outer envelopes, and carbon- (C-) rich central stars and inner envelopes, we speculate that SiO abundance could be very low in the central regions where physical conditions are optimal for maser pumping, and C-bearing molecules may be dominant in the gas phase at those locations.

    Water fountains (WFs) are thought to represent an early stage in the morphological evolution of circumstellar envelopes surrounding low- and intermediate-mass evolved stars. These objects are considered to transition from spherical to asymmetric shapes. Despite their potential importance in this transformation process of evolved stars, there are only a few known examples. To identify new WF candidates, we used databases of circumstellar OH (1612 MHz) and H2O (22.235 GHz) maser sources, and compared the velocity ranges of the two maser lines. Finally, 41 sources were found to have a velocity range for the H2O maser line that exceeded that of the OH maser line. Excluding known planetary nebulae and after reviewing the maser spectra in the original literature, we found for 11 sources the exceedance as significant, qualifying them as new WF candidates.

    We present the results of KVN Key Science Program (KSP) for evolved stars, which was launched in 2014. The first phase of KSP ended in June 2020 and the second phase started in October 2020. The goal of KSP is to study the physical characteristics of the evolved stars by observing the spatial distribution and temporal variability of the stellar masers at four frequency-bands (K, Q, W and D bands). The 22 GHz H2O maser is usually observed from the outer part of circumstellar envelopes compared to the 43, 86, 129 GHz SiO masers, thus the kinematic links between these regions can be studied by the multi-frequency simultaneous observations of KSP along the stellar pulsation cycles. This eventually enable us to study the enormous mass-loss rate of evolved stars, and the accumulated results from KSP are expected to shed light on the study of the late stage of the stellar evolution.

    Water Fountains (WFs), located between the AGB and PN phases of stellar evolution, may provide significant clues on the shaping process of PNe. We present new VLA observations of the WF candidates OH 16.3-3.0 and IRAS 19356+0754. We detect H2O and OH maser and radio continuum emission towards OH 16.3-3.0. We suggest that the OH maser emission of OH 16.3-3.0 is associated with an aspherical circumstellar envelope due to its spatio-kinematics and peculiar spectral profile. We could not confirm the candidates as bona fide WFs because of the narrow velocity spread (OH 16.3-3.0) or non-detection (IRAS 19356+0754) of H2O maser emission. Further monitoring could help to discern their nature.

    HINOTORI (Hybrid Integration Project in Nobeyama, Triple-band Oriented) has constructed a higher sensitivity 22/43 GHz and a 22/43/86 GHz simultaneous observation systems in the Nobeyama 45-m telescope by introducing new frequency separation filters in the telescope's quasi-optics. The performance of the observation systems, such as the beam squint, the aperture efficiency, the system noise temperature when inserting the filters, and the phase stability of the signal path have been evaluated. It is indicated that the established systems have sufficient performance for single-dish and VLBI observations. The single-dish observation demonstrations using the triple-band system were successfully conducted in acquiring scientific data including multiple maser lines.

    VERA has been regularly conducting astrometry of Galactic maser sources for ∼ 20 years, producing more than 100 measurements of parallaxes and proper motions of star-forming regions as well as AGB stars. By combining the observational results obtained by VLBA BeSSeL, EVN, and LBA, maser astrometry provides a unique opportunity to explore the fundamental structure of the Galaxy. Here we present the view of the Galaxy revealed by the maser astrometry, and also discuss the importance of maser astrometry in the era of GAIA by comparing the results obtained by VLBI and GAIA. We also present our view of “proper motions toward the future” of the relevant field, expected in the next decade based on global collaborations.

    We used the unprecedented resolution of ∼25 μas of the VLBI array formed with the RadioAstron satellite to study the structures of H2O maser spots in the star forming region W49N. We found that anisotropic diffractive scattering of the ISM dominates the images of the maser spot, but does not completely blur them. The refractive scattering floor is about 0.001 in visibility at a baseline of 8 Gλ.

    We present the spectral and spatial evolution of H2O masers associated with IRAS 18043-2116, a well-known water fountain hosting a high-velocity collimated jet, which has been found in the observations with the 45 m telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We found new highest velocity components of the H2O masers, with which the resulting velocity spread of ≃ 540 km s-1 breaks the speed record of fast jets/outflows in this type of sources.

    We report new detections of SiO ν = 1 and ν = 2 J = 1 → 0 masers in the water fountain source IRAS 16552-3050, which was observed with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope from March 2021 to April 2023. Water fountains are evolved stars whose H2O maser spectra trace high-velocity outflows of >100 Km s-. This is the second known case of SiO masers in a water fountain, after their prototypical source, W 43A. The line-of-sight velocity of the SiO masers are blue-shifted by ∼25 km s-1 from the systemic velocity. This velocity offset imply that the SiO masers are associated with nozzle structure formed by a jet penetrating the circumstellar envelope, and that new gas blobs of the jet erupted recently. Thus, the SiO masers imply this star to be in a new evolutionary stage.

    Eight planetary nebulae (PNe) are known to emit OH and/or H2O masers, but there is no report of an SiO maser in this type of objects. We present a search for SiO masers in 16 confirmed and candidate PNe, carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We found no evidence of association between SiO masers and PNe in our data. Previous detections of thermal SiO emission in PNe show that these molecules can be present in gas phase in this type of objects, but it is not yet clear whether they can be found where the physical conditions are appropriate for maser pumping. We suggest that the best candidates for a new search would be PNe showing high-velocity outflows.

    This paper describes an overview of the FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/H2O-maser Ignitions by the Nobeyama Generation) project promoted using the 45 m telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory, which aims to intensively monitor H2O (at 22 GHz) and SiO (at 43 GHz) masers associated with so-called "water fountain"sources. Here we show scientific results based on the data taken in the first five seasons of FLASHING, from 2018 December to 2023 April. We show the evolution of the H2O maser spectra, discovering new spectral components that break the record of the jet's top speed and/or systematic velocity drifts in the spectrum indicating acceleration or deceleration of the maser gas clumps. For the 43 GHz SiO maser emission, we newly detect it in one source and find that it is no longer present in another source. This implies that the jets from these water fountains can be accelerated or decelerated, and show how circumstellar envelopes are destroyed.

    We report VLBI monitoring observations of the 22 GHz H2O masers toward the Mira variable BX Cam. Data from 37 epochs spanning ∼3 stellar pulsation periods were obtained between May 2018 and June 2021 with a time interval of 3-4 weeks. In particular, the VERA dual-beam system was used to measure the kinematics and parallaxes of the H2O maser features. The obtained parallax, 1.79±0.08 mas, is consistent with Gaia EDR3 and previous VLBI measurements. The position of the central star was estimated relied on Gaia EDR3 data and the center position of the 43 GHz SiO maser ring imaged with KVN. Analysis of the 3D maser kinematics revealed an expanding circumstellar envelope with a velocity of 13±4 km s-1 and significant spatial and velocity asymmetries. The H2O maser animation achieved by our dense monitoring program manifests the propagation of shock waves in the circumstellar envelope of BX Cam.

    We have investigated the spectral evolutions of H2O and SiO masers associated with 12 water fountain sources in our FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/H2O-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project. Our monitoring observations have been conducted using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope every 2 weeks-2 months since 2018 December except during summer seasons. We have found new extremely high velocity H2O maser components, breaking the records of jet speeds in this type of sources. Systematic line-of-sight velocity drifts of the H2O maser spectral peaks have also been found, indicating acceleration of the entrained material hosting the masers around the jet. Moreover, by comparing with previous spectral data, we can find decadal growths/decays of H2O maser emission. Possible periodic variations of the maser spectra are further being inspected in order to explore the periodicity of the central stellar system (a pulsating star or a binary). Thus we expect to see the real-time evolution/devolutions of the water fountains over decades.

    This paper introduces the Hybrid Integration Project in Nobeyama, Triple-band Oriented (HINOTORI) promoted with the 45 m telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory. The key development of the project was perforated dichroic filter plates installed in the quasi-optics of the telescope, enabling us to simultaneously observe in dual (22 and 43 GHz) and triple (22, 43, and 86 GHz) bands. HINOTORI has also upgraded the backend system for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), enabling us to conduct three-millimeter VLBI observations in longer coherent data integration. This paper presents the specifications and the performance of the whole HINOTORI system including the filter plates that has been tested.

    We conducted CO J=1→0 emission line observations for nearby AGB stars using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. Comparing our results with those from CO J=3→2 observations with JCMT, the circumstellar envelopes observed in CO J=1→0 look more extended than J=3→2. Thus, we could trace the outer, cold parts of the envelopes. We also found four stars in which the CO/13CO ratio changes dramatically outward, but the change implies the effect of selective photodissociation by interstellar ultraviolet radiation, not the third dredge up in the stellar interior. We moreover found two unique stars with aspherical envelope morphology.

    We have investigated the evolution of 12 water fountain sources in real time in the accompanying H2O 2o and SiO masers through our FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/ H2O 2o-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project. It has been confirmed that these masers are excellent probes of new jet blob ejections, acceleration of the material supplied from the parental circumstellar envelope and entrained by the stellar jets yielding its deceleration. Possible periodic variations of the maser emission, reflecting properties of the central dying stars or binary systems, will be further investigated.

    本研究では、ミリ秒角の解像度}を実現する超長基線電波干渉法(VLBI)}において、複数波長帯電波を完全同時受信するシステムを積極的に導入し、従来感度的に困難であった短ミリ波帯VLBI撮像の手法を飛躍的に向上させる。その上で、研究の進展が最も期待される課題の１つである、長周期変光星から放出される星周物質の合成・加速過程}を探求する。発達した星周縁の中で恒星半径の2--3倍から数10倍の距離}にわたって分布する一酸化珪素(SiO)及び水(H2O)メーザーの空間分布時間変化を同時に連続追跡することで、宇宙における星間空間<-->恒星間の物質循環（星形成・恒星質量放出）のうち後者における力学的素過程を詳細に視覚化して理解することを目指す。

    VLBIは遠方の天体からの電波を複数の電波望遠鏡で受信し、相関処理を行うことで10,000km の距離と方向をミリメートル精度で、また地球の 自転速度変動を1000分の1 秒を切る精度で計測可能な宇宙測地技術である。最近では「はやぶさ2」等の深宇宙探査機の軌道決定、大陸間での 光格子時計の高精度国際周波数比較にも貢献した。しかし受信機は各観測機関の目的に特化している。また根本的に電波星からの信号を地上で 受信する限り、地球大気による電波伝播遅延誤差が精度向上の壁である。本研究は革新的な超広帯域受信観測系を開発し、大気の壁と分野の壁 を超えた汎用VLBI観測による新たなサイエンスを拓くことを目標とする。
