<p><i>Felis catus</i> papillomavirus (FcaPV) was first discovered in 2002. Seven genotypes (FcaPV-1/-2/-3/-4/-5/-6/-7) have been reported to date, at least one of which (FcaPV-2) is suggested to be implicated in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC); however, relevant epidemiological data on Japanese cats are limited. There is one report on relatively low FcaPV-2 prevalence in cats with SCC, largely in the Tokyo region. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of each FcaPV genotype in cats with SCC largely drawn from a peripheral region of Japan (Kyushu). Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens from 107 cats with SCC were subjected to DNA extraction for type-specific PCR assays, followed by confirmatory nucleotide sequencing. Overall, 16 cases (15.0%) were positive for FcaPV, and the results detected for FcaPV-1/-2/-3/-4/-5/-6/-7 were 0/107 (0.0%), 7/107 (6.5%), 4/107 (3.7%), 1/107 (0.9%), 3/107 (2.8%), 1/107 (0.9%), and 1/107 (0.9%), respectively. Our results suggest that FcaPV-2 is the prevalent papillomavirus type in cats with SCC across Japan, but the figure is lower than in other countries. This is also the first report on the detection of FcaPV-6 and FcaPV-7 in Japan, which previously have only been reported in Australia and New Zealand, respectively.</p>

<p>Iriomote cats (<i>Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis</i>) are a critically endangered, wild felid subspecies, for which blood and urine data are lacking. We evaluated hematology and serum biochemistry (n=69) and urinalysis (n=56) values for sex differences, and differences versus a reference range in domestic cats (<i>Felis catus</i>). Males showed higher red blood cell count and total cholesterol, and females showed higher platelet count. Iriomote cats showed values above the reference range in domestic cats in some parameters (alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, glucose, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine phosphokinase, and lactate dehydrogenase). Urinalysis revealed white blood cells and marginal protein levels, which were likely due to strenuous activity and stress. The study provides valuable data on health indicators for this subspecies.</p>

A 6-year-old spayed female Scottish Fold cat presented with lethargy and anorexia. A complete blood cell count indicated severe anemia and mild thrombocytopenia. Examination of peripheral blood smears revealed marked changes in the erythroid lineage, including the presence of basophilic stippling and Howell-Jolly bodies as well as an increase in nucleated erythrocytes, polychromatophils, ovalocytes, and schistocytes. Additionally, some erythrocytes contained a ring or figure-eight shaped structure known as a Cabot ring, which were especially observed in polychromatophilic erythrocytes. Hemolytic diseases (Mycoplasma infection and IMHA) were diagnostically excluded, and the cat was treated through prednisolone administration, whole blood transfusion, and administration of vitamins (K2 and B12); however, the anemia progressively worsened. Cabot rings were observed until Day 22 and subsequently disappeared as the number of nucleated RBCs increased, and the erythrocyte lineage shifted to immature population. On Day 42, peripheral blood examination revealed further left shifting and appearance of many rubriblasts. The patient died at home on Day 43. Necropsy revealed neoplastic cells infiltrating the bone marrow and other organs, which were immunopositive to CD71 which is an erythroid lineage marker. In humans, Cabot rings have been observed in megaloblastic anemia, lead poisoning, myelodysplastic syndrome, and myelofibrosis; further, they are thought to be related to stressed bone marrow and dyserythropoiesis. This is the first case report of a cat with Cabot rings, which are suggestive of defects in erythroid lineage production.

The Iriomote cat (Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis) is an endangered leopard cat that inhabits only Iriomotejima Island, Japan. The number of Iriomote cats is estimated to be approximately 100–110 and has been almost stable but slightly decreased in the coastal lowland. Infectious diseases are one of the major concerns in the conservation of Iriomote cats. Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is fatal in immunocompromised hosts, especially kittens and cat fetuses. We investigated the seroprevalence of T. gondii in Iriomote cats. Based on seroprevalence data, we simulated the effect of T. gondii infection on the population dynamics of Iriomote cats. The seroprevalence of T. gondii in Iriomote cats was significantly higher than that in domestic cats and dogs. Furthermore, the seroprevalence of T. gondii in domestic cats was significantly higher on Iriomotejima Island than on Okinawajima Island. Our simulation demonstrated that T. gondii eradication may help increase the population of Iriomote cats by an average of 11.5 (23.1%) cats in 2120. Therefore, controlling T. gondii may be an effective strategy for the conservation of Iriomote cats.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by the SFTS virus (SFTSV). SFTSV causes severe symptoms both in humans and cats. In this study, we report the clinical and pathological findings of 4 fatal cases of cats with high SFTS viremia levels. These cats showed an acute onset of fever, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and increased serum amyloid A and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels. A high viral copy number was detected in the blood, oral swabs, rectal swabs, conjunctiva swabs, and urine. Histopathologically, necrotizing lymphadenitis, splenitis with lymphoblastoid cell proliferation, and hemophagocytosis were observed in all 4 cats. Immunohistochemistry revealed the presence of SFTSV antigen on lymphoblastoid B cells. SFTSV-RNA was detected in systemic tissues, including the brain. The present findings provide useful information for understanding the features of fatal SFTS in cats. To elucidate the mechanisms of severe progress of SFTS cats, as well as its role as a source of human infection, further research is needed.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common dental health problems in dogs. Clinical studies in humans have shown that aged garlic extract (AGE), which contains stable and water-soluble sulfur-containing bioactive compounds, improves the symptoms of periodontal diseases. Our previous study demonstrated that oral administration of AGE in healthy Beagle dogs at 90 mg/kg/day for 12 weeks had no adverse effects such as hemolytic anemia, which is well known to occur as a result of ingestion of Allium species, including onions and garlic, in dogs. However, the therapeutic potential of AGE in canine periodontal disease remains unclear. Accordingly, we investigated the therapeutic effects of AGE in Beagle dogs with mild gingivitis. Feeding 18 mg/kg/day of AGE for 8 weeks resulted in the improvement of gingival index score, level of volatile sulfur compounds in exhaled air, and enzyme activity of periodontal pathogens without any adverse effects on clinical signs and hematological and serum biochemical parameters. Moreover, AGE increased the concentration of salivary cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide that contributes to the oral innate immune response. These results suggest that AGE could be a potential therapeutic agent for canine gingivitis.

Two subspecies of mainland leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis), Iriomote cats (Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis), and Tsushima leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus), are small, endangered felids that are endemic to the Japanese islands, Iriomote-jima and Tsushima, respectively. Both subspecies have an estimated population size of only about 100 individuals each. Therefore, it is crucial to expand our understanding of these subspecies to successfully conserve them. While their morphology, anatomy, ecology, pathology, and genetics are well studied, little is known about their physiology regulated in subspecies-specific manners. This study characterized their urinary volatile and nonvolatile organic compounds, with which individuals express their physiological status and territorial ownership. We found significantly higher levels of 3-mercapto-3-methyl-1-butanol and its structural analogs, which are scent signals of domestic cats, in the urinary headspace of Iriomote cats than in that of Tsushima leopard cats. There were no differences in the urinary levels of felinine, an amino acid that acts as a precursor of 3-mercapto-3-methyl-1-butanol, suggesting the variation of catalytic activities for decomposing felinine to 3-mercapto-3-methyl-1-butanol between subspecies. Both subspecies exhibited physiological proteinuria due to the secretion of carboxylesterase 5A, also known as cauxin, for the production of felinine. In conclusion, while the two endangered Japanese subspecies of mainland leopard cats share similar genetic backgrounds, urinary contents of metabolites vary between the subspecies. We suggest that after the separation into two subspecies, the regulation of the metabolic pathway for 3-mercapto-3-methyl-1-butanol production likely evolved differently in each subspecies in response to their specific environments.
