To understand the underlying neuronal representation for object recognition, we designed this study to investigate the changes in N1, the first negative event-related potential component, accompanied by object discrimination learning. Subjects were asked to train themselves to recognize novel computer-made objects by performing an object discrimination task, in which an object had to be discriminated from others regardless of the change in viewing angle. Such object discrimination did not cause any significant change in either the averaged N1 amplitude or the averaged amplitude delay over the subjects. However, the dipole source analysis for N1 found statistically significant displacement of estimated dipole location caused by object discrimination training in the right hemisphere. The source obtained after training located significantly laterally than that obtained before training. The finding demonstrates the difference in neuronal representations of the experienced objects before and after view-invariant object discrimination learning, and suggests the different neuronal representations for object recognition with novel objects and familiar objects.

We have previously reported an increase in response tolerance of inferotemporal cells around trained views. However, an inferotemporal cell usually displays different response patterns in an initial response phase immediately after the stimulus onset and in a late phase from approximately 260 ms after stimulus onset. This study aimed to understand the difference between the two time periods and their involvement in the view-invariant object recognition. Responses to object images with and without prior experience of object discrimination across views, recorded by microelectrodes, were pooled together from our previous experiments. With a machine learning algorithm, we trained to build classifiers for object discrimination. In the early phase, the performance of classifiers created based on data of responses to the object images with prior training of object discrimination across views did not significantly differ from that based on data of responses to the object images without prior experience of object discrimination across views. However, the performance was significantly better in the late phase. Furthermore, compared to the preferred stimulus image in the early phase, we found 2/3 of cells changed their preference in the late phase. For object images with prior experience of training with object discrimination across views, a significant higher percentage of cells responded in the late phase to the same objects as in the early phase, but under different views. The results demonstrate the dynamics of selectivity changes and suggest the involvement of the late phase in the view-invariant object recognition rather than that of the early phase.

Three-dimensional objects can be recognized regardless of the viewing angles. It was reported that the cells in the temporal association area responded tolerantly in a certain viewing angle range to the objects experienced in discrimination at the same viewing angles. In the present study, machine learning was applied to the population response vectors in the temporal association area. A classifier was trained to create a hyperplane that separated an object from similar object at the same viewing angles and then tested by the population response vectors to the object images at a different viewing angle. The discrimination performance evaluated from true positives, false positives, and d’ values was higher in the objects experienced in discrimination at the same viewing angles than those without discrimination experience in the whole 100–600 ms time window. For the objects experienced in discrimination at the same viewing angles, the d’ values were low in the early phase of the responses of 100–220 ms time window, but became higher in the late phase of 220–600 ms time window. The d’ values for the objects experienced by learning association of different views of the objects were high in the early and late phases of the responses. The results demonstrate computational models for object representation created by using cellular responses in the temporal association area, and differences of the representation of the viewing angle tolerance in different time windows.

Visual environmental changes dynamically, which causes change of object image reflected in the retina. However, we can identify an object from others effortlessly in daily life. This study focused on the change in viewing angle and aimed to elucidate the underlying neural processing for view-invariant object recognition. Inferotemporal cortex locates at the end of ventral cortical pathway which is critical for object recognition and discrimination. We have previously investigated the inferotemporal cell stimulus selectivity to the training object images and its change during object discrimination learning. In the present study, we generated response vectors using the firing frequency data of a cell population in inferotemporal cortex, and created object discrimination classifiers by training with the set of vectors with machine learning algorithm. Furthermore, we proposed a method with much higher temporal resolution to visualize the formation process of view-invariant object recognition, by shortening analysis window.
